Bishop Ireton High School, a Catholic college preparatory school in Alexandria, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Director of Special Education. This role oversees student support programs as well as management of Student Assistant Plans (our 504 Plans) and Individualized Catholic Education Plans (our IEPs). This leadership role takes the lead on serving Bishop Ireton students with various learning needs, provides ongoing professional development for colleagues, and provides informational sessions for parents. Quick Overview
Bishop Ireton opened inclusion support programs in the 2020-2021 school year including the Academic Support Program (AS), De Sales Program (DS), and Options Program. The Academic Support Program is designed for any student who is challenged, with or without special education identification. The De Sales Program specializes in supporting students with learning disabilities and/or mild developmental disabilities so they can successfully mitigate their unique learning needs in the rigorous academic environment of BI. The Options Program is an inclusion-based support for students with Intellectual Disabilities. The Director of Special Services also manages other student support programs including the afterschool Homework Center, Peer Mentor Program, Student Support Team, English Learner Supports, student plan management, and special events.
The ideal candidate will have experience serving special education populations in both public and private schools with a leadership style that focuses on strengths-based and positive support approaches to developing teacher practice and supporting student social/emotional needs. The ideal candidate should be passionate about supporting neurodiverse students in a college preparatory environment and excited to build Special Services programming rooted in the Catholic faith.
Primary Responsibilities
Ongoing Program and Team Development:
Supervise Special Services Teachers, including scheduling, observations and evaluations
Work with the AS Lead Teacher to manage the Academic Support Program
Work with the DS Lead Teacher to manage the De Sales Program including continuing the new executive functioning curriculum
Work with the Options Program teachers, including the implementation of social skills and life skills curriculum, navigating student needs, and managing behaviors across the school day
Work with the Peer Mentor Program Coordinator on logistics; helping to identify potential Peer Mentors, managing schedules, running peer mentor training and on-going support, etc.
Coordinate with Homework Center Leads to provide routine and support
Support the Special Services Department Chair
Work with Student Support Team co-chairs (one from special services, one from general education) to develop procedures and practices for the SST
Begin to identify innovative ways to support English Learners at BI
Explore diverse funding streams including renewal of annual grants
Leadership Responsibilities:
Assist Director of Admissions in reviewing applicants and assigning to appropriate programs
Participate in new student orientations, recruiting events, back to school night, etc.
Manage small group and read aloud testing for midterms and final exams; coordinate with counseling department on accommodations for SAT/AP/ACT exams
Regularly collaborate with the administration and counselors on student support needs
Assist the Dean of Academics with specialized scheduling for students in Special Services
Work with facilities to maintain beautiful classrooms that are inviting and accommodating to diverse learners; coordinate Special Services Special Events such as Special Olympics tournaments, Options Meet and Greet, annual MANDT training, etc.
Complete annual reports for school, Diocese, and state reporting
Meet with school organizations to update on the success and activities of programs
Member of the Senior Staff, advising on successes and issues from a special education lens
Member of the Academic Council advising on student needs
Member of the Bishop Ireton Diversity Council
Represent the BI Special Services team at Diocese-wide meetings, working with the Asst. Superintendent of Specialized Instruction and coordinate with other directors
Regularly return email and phone communications for all stakeholders, with a focus on parents of students in the Special Services Programs
Case Management of Student Assistance Plans:
Oversee assignments of case managers, work with the SAP Coordinator for new eligibilities and deadline management throughout the year; work with the Options Teachers to develop attainable goals for students
Lead yearly file audits; manage timeline for triennials and annual IEP/504 meetings and coordinate with local school districts to keep student files updated
Interpret neuropsychological tests and other eligibility paperwork for proper student placement and support
Manage a personal case load of Student Assistance Plans from eligibility to implementation to review.
Professional Development:
Direct support of faculty through designed and delivered on-going professional development based on team-identified needs
Coach general education teachers on best practices in inclusion and appropriate use of accommodations and modifications in the general education classroom
Qualifications
Master’s degree in special education or related field
Experience as a school leader or administrator, preference to candidates with both public and private school experience
Effective oral and written communication
