Budget Title: Instructional Support Associate (SL-2)

Salary: $45,000 - $50,000

The UDC Library Services Assistant Manager is responsible for a range of duties including assisting in oversight of the UDC Library service point and supervising a team of approximately 8 undergraduate student employees who staff a circulation service desk; and serve as functional supervisor to the graduate student employee staff in the absence of the UDC Library Services Manager.

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide excellent customer service to library patrons and to train student employees in providing excellent library service. The ability to work independently and to function effectively in a flexible team setting are requirements of the position.

Primary hours during the academic year are Monday- Friday 9:00am -5:00pm. The academic year runs from late August to late May. The library hours may be adjusted during holidays, winter and summer intersessions, and times classes are not in session. In those cases, the position schedule will be adjusted to an earlier shift (i.e. 8:00 am -4:00 pm). The successful candidate must have the ability to work a variable schedule to provide evening or weekend coverage as needed.

The UDC Library Services Assistant Manager reports to the UDC Location Services Manager with the Head of High Impact Practices and Service Locations as second line supervisor.

Supervision duties include:

  • Recruiting and Hiring: Champion the University's and Libraries' missions to assemble a dynamic, diverse workforce
  • Training: Implement engaging, thorough training for student employees
  • Scheduling: Coordinate desk schedules to ensure appropriate desk coverage for all shifts including evenings and weekends
  • Supervising: Maintain performance programs for student employees; train, mentor, and ensure accuracy of work performed. Delegates with clearly defined responsibility, and leads a high performing team of individuals who value collective achievement.
  • Evaluating: Engage reports in establishing measurable goals for assessment and professional development; celebrates accomplishments and identifies areas for growth.

In addition, the position:

  • Participates in a work culture that promotes diversity and anti-racism and actively works to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and biases.
  • Serves as patrons' first impression of the Libraries, while providing excellent service through critical thinking and listening skills and tailoring communication style appropriately.
  • Collaborates with fellow student supervisors at the UDC, Bartle, and Science locations to improve student employee training methods and ensure a consistent patron experience across locations.
  • Supervises Student employees; while maintaining student staff budget.
  • Resolves problems related to patron issues, circulation of library materials, and Library equipment. Actively gathers statistical data as requested and seeks out ways to measure and report outcomes and processes.
  • Maintains open and timely communication regarding staffing and patron related issues with the UDC Location Services Manager. Provides service coverage as directed. Understands and follows all safety and security procedures, including consulting with University Police and maintaining familiarity with emergency procedures.
  • Maintains communication with campus IT to support the daily maintenance of Information Commons technology, including public computers, printers and classroom IT. Troubleshoot and report issues related to Libraries' technology to Library IT.
  • Supports Resource Sharing and Course Reserves operations. This may include processing requests, scanning, and pulling materials from the stacks.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills by maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues and students in the Libraries and throughout the University.
  • As appropriate, and at the discretion of the UDC Location Services Manager, engages in Libraries' planning and programming activities; maintains excellence in primary responsibilities and makes recommendations and implements services based on operational policies and procedures; serves on library-wide committees.
Job Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Google Suites and demonstrated comfort with learning new applications
  • Ability to lift as much as 30 pounds during the course of the day
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule according to staffing needs and library hours at certain times of the year

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with integrated library systems, content management, and/or scheduling softwares
  • Demonstrates leadership/supervisory experience
  • Proven ability to lead projects and see them through to completion within established timelines
