Budget Title: Academic Advisor (SL-3)

Salary: $53,500 - $55,000

The Binghamton Student Support Services (SSS) Program is modeled after Binghamton University's successful TRIO SSS Program, a college retention program funded by the United States Department of Education. This new, institutionally-funded program seeks to demonstrate that earning a quality education and achieving life-long success is not limited by financial status, background, or disability The SSS program aims to increase retention and graduation of first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI) students and/or students with disabilities.

SSS is seeking an Academic Counselor who is committed to this mission, and has experience advising, mentoring, teaching and/or tutoring students of diverse backgrounds. Successful candidates possess the drive and skills necessary to develop meaningful relationships with students, staff, faculty, and the University community to support the success of program participants.

The Academic Counselor is under general supervision of the Associate Director for SSS. All SSS Programs are housed within the Division of Student Affairs.

Essential Duties:

• Academic Counsel and Advisement
  • Provide academic, career, financial and personal counseling to program participants
  • Maintain timely, accurate and detailed student records
  • Providing regular outreach to assigned caseload of students
  • Make referrals to appropriate SSS and campus resources
  • Assist participants with planning for postgraduate studies and/or employment
• Teaching
  • Included in the teaching rotation for the following courses based on qualifications and experience: WRIT 100, a supplemental instruction course in writing; UNIV 103, a first-year experience course; and/or WTSN 301, a graduate school prep course
  Utilize technology to teach an online workshop (in either writing, math, or soft skill developmental topics
  • -depending on applicant skillset and qualifications) offered to SSS Summer Program (S4P) participants
• Programming
  • Design and implement SSS programming to enhance the academic, career, and personal development of program participants
  • Contribute to the development of our summer bridge program, S4P, by developing and delivering workshops and seminars
  • Assist in planning special events such as award ceremonies, National TRIO Day, and others
• Admissions
  • Assist in outreach efforts (i.e. work with University Admissions to attend Admitted Students Days and participate in information sessions for Binghamton University applicants)
  • May be asked to travel for recruitment purposes
• Travel/Professional Development Activities
  • Individual is expected to attend at least one regional or national conference each year as the budget allows
  • Relevant University professional development attendance is also expected
• Correspondence
  • Generate correspondence related to advising caseload, including drafting recommendation letters for scholarships, employment, and graduate/professional school applications

Other Expectations:

• Work Hours: Will work occasional weekend and evening hours as assigned, will work extended hours during S4P
• University Committees: May be asked to sit on University committees to enhance the visibility of Bing SSS and allow opportunities to advocate for Bing SSS students

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
• Experience advising, mentoring, teaching and/or tutoring
• Demonstrated experience working with students who are FGLI and/or from marginalized communities
• Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred:

• Master's degree in Education, Teaching, Social Work, Student Affairs Administration, Higher Education, Academic Advising, Counseling, or closely related field
• Ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in overcoming barriers similar to SSS participants
• Prior experience working in opportunity programs
• Experience counseling, advising, and/or mentoring FGLI college students
