Frequent travel of about 30 - 40% is required along with occasional evening and weekend work. About BES

BES is a national nonprofit organization that identifies and prepares excellent leaders to transform education in their communities. For more than two decades, BES has prepared leaders to found 200 schools in 50 cities across 20 states and Washington DC, educating 72,000 students – of whom 82 percent qualify for free/reduced lunch, and 94 percent identify as students of color. In all, BES has trained more than 2,700 leaders to found, lead, and grow schools through its leadership development offerings.

About the Position 

The Director of Leadership Development, Finance and Operations will support our New Schools team. On our New Schools team, coaches support leaders to design and launch schools around the country through our Fellowship program and Follow On Support through year 2 of operations. 

Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Leadership Development, Finance and Operations will be responsible for:

Coach and Support Leaders (75%)

Finance and Operations Coaching:

  • Coaching Support: Coach and develop leaders in the areas of financial management and school operations, including facilities development, to ensure that leaders are prepared to launch and operate equitable and anti-racist schools that lead to strong academic outcomes for all learners and which are fiscally and operationally sound. In coordination with other BES staff, coach leaders to manage and develop their boards, and provide direct coaching to board members. 
  • School Design Plan and Application Support for Fellows: Guide Fellows through financial planning and budgeting within the charter application processes, ensuring realistic and viable plans for equitable schools with strong academic outcomes. 
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with other BES coaches to ensure comprehensive support. Regularly communicate with BES staff and regional partners to ensure that leaders are on track to successfully launch and operate a high-quality school.

Programming (25%)

  • Training: Rooted in research and evidence, design impactful finance and operations training sessions. 
  • Research: Conduct research to support Fellows and leaders in school finance and operations, application development, and implementation. 
  • Resource Development: Document and make recommendations on effective finance and operations practices. 
  • Program Development: Develop equitable finance and operations coaching aligned with anti-racist school design. 
  • Fellow Selection: Conduct interviews for the Fellowship in accordance with established protocols in collaboration with the Talent and Recruitment team.

Skills and, Experiences, and Competencies: 

  • School Finance Leadership: 5 years of experience in school finance and operations, including knowledge of the facility development process. Experience serving students in and from low-income communities, and/or has managed school leaders in this setting.
  • Proven Leader in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Has a track record of managing and/or working with diverse teams to achieve ambitious goals and has a vision for an equitable and excellent school experience for students and families from the most marginalized communities. Has a track record of making commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion practical, tangible, and results-oriented.
  • Leadership of School Growth, Replication, or Mergers: Has led efforts to ensure successful school growth, replication, or mergers and understands the impact of these efforts on academics, finances, community engagement, and local politics.
  • Organizational Leadership: Has led or significantly contributed to the fiscal and operational health of a non-profit organization. 
  • Authorization Experience (preferred): Has contributed to successful authorization and/or renewal and understands the nuanced stages of school authorization and/or renewal processes.

Compensation:

BES offers a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes medical and dental coverage, a 401(k) contribution match, paid time off, paid parental leave, and the ability to work remotely. 

The 2024-25 salary range for Director I level positions at BES is:

  • Minimum: $106,316
  • Maximum: $120,825
