Atomic Machines is Hiring an Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager Near Berkeley, CA

Our mission at Atomic Machines is to bring autonomous bits-to-atoms manufacturing of anything at any scale to the world, and we are well on our way. We are developing an entirely new class of manufacturing foundry for micro- and nano-scale machines, and we are using that foundry to create products the world has heretofore been unable to build. Our first device has exceptionally strong and large-scale product-market fit: it is both iconic of what our platform can do and a driver of very significant enterprise scale.

Joining forces with us means becoming part of an incredibly talented, inventive and passionate multi-disciplinary team running hard to make our platform, devices and vision a reality. You will have the opportunity to help define the company from its earliest days. You’ll be challenged to learn and grow as a builder and a leader as the company itself grows rapidly. And you will receive significant equity compensation - you’ll truly be a company owner and benefit financially from our overall success.

Our offices are located in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About This Role:

We are looking for an Environmental, Health & Safety Manager to manage our EH&S operations. You will be responsible for maturing our EH&S practices by improving our policies and rolling them out to the company. The Head of Safety will be expected to lead by example and demonstrate a strong personal commitment to EH&S and the safe operation of all Atomic Machines facilities. You will ensure that we are compliant to all applicable standards and that our workplace is safe for our employees and visitors. This role is ideally based in our Berkeley office but could be based in Santa Clara for a more experienced leader with the ability to travel between offices.

What you will do:

  • Create the next iteration of our EH&S policy which covers all customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that the EH&S policy is communicated to all parties to which it applies and that all such parties (employees, vendors, contractors, and visitors) are properly trained on its contents.
  • Plan and execute safety training for all Atomic Machines staff.
  • Lead regular site inspections and audits to make sure that we are compliant with all applicable standards and customer requirements.
  • Ensure that appropriate safety equipment is in place, properly maintained, and certified for use.
  • Chair regular reviews of the EH&S policy to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Leading hazard analysis, ensuring that such analyses are performed before starting any new work.
  • Establish and maintain an issue-reporting system. Head of Safety shall be responsible for ensuring satisfactory resolution of any flagged risks, near misses, or actual safety incidents.
  • Establish targets and metrics related to safety as appropriate and report progress on these metrics to senior leadership.
  • Be the point of contact for customer site visits. Lead these visits and any follow-up actions identified.
  • Interface with outside parties in the course of audit or incident response.
  • Provide adequate resources to ensure managers and employees have what they need to effectively implement EH&S policies.
  • Ensure accurate records are maintained in an audit-ready state.
  • Ensure that appropriate incident response plans are in place.
  • Establish Atomic Machines’ environmental procedures and guidelines to make sure we are acting in an environmentally responsible manner.
What you’ll need:
  • 7 years experience managing EH&S programs.
  • Be trained in incident investigation by a reputable training body.
  • Familiarity with Class 4 laser safety practices and requirements.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and compliance requirements related to our business.
  • Familiarity with best practices for handling hazardous substances.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment including familiarity with common manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to maintain strong cross-functional relationships while implementing safety procedures.
  • Bachelor of Science in a related discipline.
