Atomic Machines is Hiring a Systems Integration Engineer Near Berkeley, CA

Atomic Machines is on Earth to radically advance humanity’s command over matter. Our mission is real-time bits-to-atoms manufacturing of anything at any scale, and to that end, we’re developing an entirely new digital micro-device manufacturing platform that is going to redefine how things are made, and do so while simultaneously enabling the rapid creation at any scale of new classes of machines – think medical micro-robotics, true lab-on-chip microfluidics, tunable antennas, ultrafast high-power and high-frequency RF switching devices and many more. The first device we are building with our platform has exceptional large-scale product/market fit and commercial traction, and we are pushing hard to share it with the world. Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About this Role:

As a Systems Integration Engineer at Atomic Machines, your role will encompass a diverse set of responsibilities focused on prototyping, system testing, project integration, and cross-functional coordination. You'll be hands-on in developing calibration, configuration, and tuning processes for our automated manufacturing platform's engineering prototypes; ensuring early builds align with design standards and are well-documented for future manufacturing phases. Your expertise will be crucial in overseeing system testing, troubleshooting, and ensuring reliability standards are met during testing phases. Collaborating closely with hardware and software teams, you'll prioritize integration needs, support hardware development projects and drive towards improved integration and manufacturability. Your role also involves being a primary interface between different teams, fostering collaboration, and diving into debugging and problem-solving when issues arise, contributing to a cohesive approach to project implementation and continuous improvement in system integration processes. This position offers opportunities for growth in leadership, technical expertise, and interdisciplinary engineering experience as Atomic Machines continues on its rapid growth trajectory.

What You’ll Do:

  • Partnering with the project leads to assisting with bring-up, calibration, and debugging of Atomic Machines series of complex robotic subsystems.
  • Rapidly learn the Electrical and Embedded architecture of our system, staying up to date with new features and issues in this workstream. Serve as the first point of contact for electromechanical debugging, escalating issues to the responsible EE or ESE when prudent.
  • Work with the SW team to understand the AMP Control code and SW architecture, in order to write effective test scripts and automation of the system.
  • Work with the Mechanical Designers to enable their workflows and support a variety of new hardware and software implementations.
  • Design and execute experiments and tests to quantify performance on various critical metrics and use these results to inform engineering decisions and system improvements.
What You’ll Need:
  • A broad understanding of hardware (mechatronics, optics, dynamics, custom electronics, sensors and actuators, etc.) as well as experience with SW systems for controls, communication, signal processing, scheduling, etc.
  • Familiarity with object-oriented programming, preferably Python, for test automation and data post-processing and enabling reuse of code.
  • Experience using standard lab and test equipment like power supplies, DMMs, NI DAQs, load cells, torque transducers, pressure transducers, thermocouples, strain gauges, etc.
  • Experience building, designing, documenting, and troubleshooting prototype electromechanical systems.
  • Previous experience with hardware validation, DFMEAs, risk assessments, and characterization of failure modes is preferred.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Eng, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or equivalent relevant industry work experience.
