Departmental Overview
The Office of Environment, Health & Safety's (EH&S) mission is to provide guidance and services to the campus community that promote health, safety, and environmental stewardship.
EH&S is a highly dynamic, fast paced, committed organization focused on promoting workplace safety and environmental protection for the campus community. We are comprised of many scientific, technical, and administrative professionals, working in an evolving, learning, and sometimes challenging environment with a unified goal of supporting the University's mission of teaching, research and public service. The applications programmer is part of a small, dedicated programming team responsible for development, upgrade, and maintenance of mission-critical original applications in support of EH&S programs.

Responsibilities
Applies application and system architecture concepts to design, develop, modify, debug, deploy and evaluate complex web applications. This includes system implementation plans, coding, unit testing, use of design patterns, upgrades and conversion, and measuring and improving system performance.
Develop full stack web applications and related processes that meet UC Berkeley security and accessibility standards. Analyze requirements, formulate solutions, and ensure successful execution and delivery of the end product. Follow defined continuous integration and deployment (i.e. CI/CD) strategies. Develop original code in Java, maintain and improve existing Java code, and migrate processes from other languages and legacy systems. Analyze and manipulate data in Java and SQL. Performs security updates, troubleshoots systems and performs application maintenance. Develop application code that interacts with third-party vendors, code libraries, and APIs. Completes assigned tasks in an issue tracking system. Properly documents solution(s) including documenting using standard Java code comments, GIT version control commit comments, and the campus Wiki. Monitor industry trends, technologies, standards and research, recommend, and apply new technologies as necessary.
Negotiates, develops and executes moderately complex test plans.
Develops conversion and system implementation plans. Performs complex data modeling, performance and integration testing and builds interfaces for a variety of internal and external constituents. Monitors and employs source code control techniques and configuration management.
Gathers, analyzes, prepares and summarizes recommendations for approval of system and programming documentation.
Recommends and implements changes in development, maintenance and system standards. Negotiates with stakeholders on the creation of software specifications. Ensures project reports are made.
Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely, especially to non-technical personnel.
Interact with senior level internal personnel. May serve as technical lead for a software development project of moderate scope. Trains users in conversion and implementation of systems.
Staff development:
Works on professional committees and assignments, participates in professional training and attends relevant conferences, and/or is mentored or coached on a formal or informal basis
At the request of campus management (EH&S Director, VC Administration/Research, UCPD Chief, or designated alternate), serve in a designate role within the EH&S Emergency Support Function and be on call to the campus Emergency Operations Center in a campus designated disaster or campus hazardous material release/threatened release.
Provide appropriate emergency response role based upon expertise and, where applicable, designated departmental role.
Required Qualifications
Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and deployment, including object-oriented programming concepts. Thorough knowledge of applications programming in Java and (to a lesser degree) Javascript. Advanced knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, responsive UI layouts using tools such as JQuery, Bootstrap, JSP and/or ThymeLeaf. Demonstrable experience with DevOps and QA automation tools such as Maven, Git and/or Jenkins. Experience with the design, development, and optimization of relational database (MySQL) applications. Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs. Experience with using code libraries and open-source tools. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Demonstrated broad problem-solving skills; ability to troubleshoot code/environment issues to resolve incidents. Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with single-sign on process; OAuth2 and/or CAS experience. Applied knowledge of WCAG/W3C/508 standards for accessibility. Experience with cloud architecture/environments (GCP).
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $74,300.00 - $108,500.00.
