ArtCenter College of Design is Hiring a Technical Services Specialist Near Pasadena, CA

ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Technical Services Specialist to join our team.
The salary range for this position: $24.72 - 28.29 (35 hours per week)

Reporting to the Cataloging & Technical Services Librarian, the Technical Services Specialist is responsible for all end-processing of library materials, including monographs and serials, in addition to assistance with copy cataloging and data cleanup. This position will be responsible for the ongoing management of the serials collection, supervising student workers on end-processing workflows, and performing copy cataloging on monographs, games, media items, and new serials titles. The incumbent will also provide support with performing inventories, deaccessioning, image cataloging, and participating in broader library projects as needed.

This is a full-time, in-region position. Normal business hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with at least two days in the office. The position may require flexibility to work a staggered, remote or alternate schedule to meet the demands of the work, which could include weekends or evenings.

Cataloging — 40%

  • Assign call numbers with cutter numbers and create labels for material according to DDC23 and local standards, making call number corrections and minor bibliographic corrections according to local guidelines
  • Perform copy cataloging for serials and print materials in a variety of subject areas focusing on art and design through use of the library catalog (Innovative’ s Sierra), a national library database (OCLC.org), local guidelines, and standards for classification and subject terminology (DDC, LCSH).
  • Enhance subject headings with relevant local topics and themes (all items)
  • Contribute to cataloging of digital image repository assets with VRA Core 4.0, CCO, Getty Vocabularies.

Serials Maintenance —40%

  • Manage the serials collection, add new check-in cards, fix errors in ILS records, locate misrouted issues
  • Update holdings on an ongoing basis
  • Deaccession back issues
  • Conduct regular holdings clean-up projects, update older holdings to align with current local standards
  • Contribute to collection development of serials, working with Research & Instruction librarians to make decisions on weeding, new acquisitions, and review requests from faculty and students
  • Provide personal assistance and guidance in identifying, locating, and using serials collection
  • Continue to improve serials operations, evaluating effectiveness of current workflows and adjusting as necessary

Physical Processing — 15%

  • Perform end-processing on outgoing library items (such as adding security stamps, library ownership stamps, and covering library materials) working alone and with student workers
  • Perform end-processing on all serial titles on standing order (checking in, stamping, updating holdings, shelving) working alone and with student workers
  • Retrieve, route and process incoming donations; route repair items as needed
  • Hire, train and supervise student workers
  • Participate in inventories, relocation, reclassification, deaccessioning, storage, and other projects as assigned

Non-Essential — 5%

  • Serve on library and college-wide committees, work groups, task forces and/or councils
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or any equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Minimum one year of recent cataloging experience (within the last 3 years) in a library setting, including experience copy cataloging records from OCLC and using local templates
  • Demonstrated ability to assign basic call numbers according to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
  • Basic knowledge of print cataloging, classification and cutter numbers, as well as demonstrated knowledge of current library standards (DDC23, RDA, MARC21, LCSH)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work both independently and collaboratively on teams to complete projects on a deadline
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing library environment
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrated experience in cultivating the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, access and belonging into work practices and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within Art Center’s diverse communities
  • Ability to handle all information with tact and discretion and recognize the confidential nature of ArtCenter business

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience cataloging visual resources
  • Experience managing serials collections; tracking perpetual access, etc.
  • Basic subject knowledge of art and design
