Architect of the Capitol is Hiring a Health and Fitness Specialist Near Washington, DC

The position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, House Office Buildings, House Wellness Center women’s program. Responsible for administering programs in exercise, general nutrition, stress management, and other preventive health measures to Members of Congress. Provides activities to enhance the health, physical fitness and restorative needs of the Members, including Yoga, Pilates, and general strength and conditioning.

Qualifications:

You must meet the United States Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) qualification requirements (including specialized experience and/or educational requirements) for the advertised position. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
 
Candidates for the GS-11 grade level must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience is defined as having:

(1)  A significant accumulation of time in teaching YOGA;

(2)  Experience in leading group exercise activities, including Studio Cycling or Mat Pilates;

(3)  Experience coaching/personally training individuals in exercise activities (i.e. cardiovascular conditioning, strength conditioning, mobility, and balance);

(4)  Experience teaching/training exercise to diverse populations, including women and seniors; and

(5)  Experience designing and leading exercise programs for people of special clinical populations (i.e., those with conditions like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, or metabolic syndrome).

Responsibilities:

The tour of duty hours will be Monday-Thursday shift, 10:30am-7:00pm, with a Friday shift as early as 7:30am-4:00pm (negotiable) to accommodate Congress.

  • Develops personalized strategies for promoting and coaching health, fitness, and restorative self-care
  • Designs and administers exercise programs on request for individuals' specific needs
  • Plans individual and group exercises programs that build cardiovascular endurance, neuromuscular strength and balance and flexibility, and other aspects of functional capacity.
  • Conducts health and physical fitness assessments prior to developing an individual exercise plan
  • Conducts assessments that may include but are not limited to cardiovascular exercise capacity, blood pressure monitoring, heart rate monitoring, body composition analysis, strength, balance, mobility, flexibility, posture and functional capacity.
  • Leads exercises individually and in group settings.
  • Teaches exercising individuals techniques in self-awareness, self-monitoring, and self-management of bodily functions.
  • Instructs techniques for specialized group fitness activities.
  • Develops educational and service programs promoting preventive health practices, health risks awareness, and recreation for members within the Wellness Center.
  • Instructs members in the proper use of various equipment and facilities, such as treadmills, electronic and computer programmed stationary cycles, air resistant stationary cycles, arm cycles, stair stepping machines, elliptical step machines, rowing machines, skiing machines, various modes of strength training machines, therapeutic whirl pools, and other fitness devices as appropriate
  • Maintains a secure, confidential computer and/or hard copy record keeping system to account for preventive health care records for each participating member.
  • Administers basic life support (i.e., CPR/AED) and first aid as is necessary.  Complies with all safety procedures for equipment utilized.
