U.S. Agency for International Development is Hiring a Health Science Specialist (Lead Emergency Response Coordinator) Near Washington, DC

Duties

  • Serves as a technical expert to the Agency in incident command and emergency management o ensure appropriate preparedness and response to both outbreak and non-outbreak health emergencies.
  • Leads on planning, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the Global Health Bureau's operational systems in response to outbreak and non-outbreak health emergencies.
  • Communicates and facilitates preparedness and response in the health space. Proactively liaises across the Agency to ensure coordination in health responses, with a particular coordination with the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.
  • Leads and provides reports on effective and succinct written and oral communication on emergency management systems, focused on health emergency responses, to a variety of senior technical and policy audiences internal and external to the Agency.
  • Builds consensus, when possible, in order to recommend solutions to GH/AA and Agency Front Office colleagues to address emergency management priorities.
  • Responsible for furthering Agency Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) goals and objectives. Specifically, incumbent initiates diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility practices in areas to include personnel practices.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
To qualify for this position, you must also meet one of the following requirements:
Specialized Experience:
GS-14: You need at least one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience refers to full-time work, while part-time roles are considered on a prorated basis. Qualifying specialized experience includes:
  • Managing incident/emergency functions during infectious disease outbreaks or other health emergencies, at the global, regional, national, or local level; AND
  • Coordinating with a wide range of stakeholders on emergency response programs related to public health emergencies; to include governments, research organizations, academia, international or local non-government organizations (NGOs), civil society, communities, or multilateral organizations; AND
  • Applying incident management principles to response-related project design or management, which may include operational readiness, resource prioritization, or response operations, AND
  • Advising on strategy, policy, planning, or implementation of incident management systems related to public health emergencies or infectious disease outbreaks.
Experience includes both paid and unpaid activities, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work provides training and experience that can translate directly to paid employment. Qualifying experience, including volunteer experience, that aligns with the duties of this position will be considered.
