The Global Commercial Services (GCS) Product Design & Research team crafts designs for commercial businesses globally and at scale. As a Director of UX Design, you'll lead a team to define the future user experience for digital tools which empower Corporate Card administrators to become trusted advisors and guides within their organization. Design is key to enable these administrators to focus on what is most important for their company’s payments program.

How will you make an impact in this role?

This role leads a growing full-stack Design team to deliver customer-centric experiences for global and large market Commercial customers. You have a strong background leading design processes through the entire UX workflow that deliver business outcomes for digital products and/or service experiences. You also have a broad set of skills in coaching and mentoring to encourage an iterative design culture. You have an anything’s-possible attitude and can lead the full design process from problem-framing, guiding conceptual solutions, and crafting and delivering those digital experiences that benefit our customers and our business.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develops and communicates a compelling design vision strategy that aligns with product and business goals
  • Stays up to date with industry trends, new technologies and standard methodologies in product design
  • Collaborates with key partners, including product managers, engineers, and executives, to define and prioritize design initiatives
  • Ensures the effective management of designers through planning and delivery of all design work
  • Partners closely with other digital product management leaders to lead the design strategy for the Commercial servicing platform
  • Champions a user-centric design approach, ensuring that user the end-users' needs, behaviors and problems are at the core of the design process
  • Define and maintain design principles, guidelines, and standards to ensure consistency and quality across products
  • Leads, encourages, and develops a team of product designers, providing guidance, mentorship and support to cultivate their professional growth
  • Set clear goals and expectations for design and ensures they are aligned with the company's overall objectives
  • Leads effective collaboration between the design team and other departments
  • Presents design concepts, strategies, and recommendations to executive partners and other cross-functional teams, successfully articulating design rationale and benefits
  • Ensures quality and consistency of UX assets including developing site maps, process flows, wireframes, functional specifications; preparing and conducting user validation and/or usability testing sessions; and developing user profiles, personas, and scenarios
  • Help conceptualize and build innovative concepts that meet the product’s business objectives and requirements while helping our customers achieve their goals

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or education in design, human-computer interaction, or related field
  • Have a current understanding of user research, interaction design, and visual design standard processes and experience translating those into design solutions
  • Have strong digital literacy and firm grasp of Figma and/or other UX, prototyping, and research tools
  • Has been the design key contributor on several major large scale digital design projects, from start to finish
  •  Experience leading and mentoring both junior and senior designers
  • Experience crafting style guides, pattern libraries, and other design solutions that drive design across large organizations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A successful candidate will have:
  • Expertise leading the UX workflow across multiple product workstreams
  • A customer-first attitude balancing design needs and business insight
  • Ability to simplify and turn sophisticated interactions into intuitive user experiences
  • Knowledge of different qualitative user experience methods and tools, e.g. usability testing, remote testing, and when to apply them
  • Experience with understanding user journeys, identifying user problems and crafting solutions to tackle customer problems
  • Experience leading in workshops on topics such as design thinking, solutioning, rapid prototyping, and journey mapping
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage, influence, and encourage partners to drive collaboration and alignment
  • High degree of organization, individual initiative and personal accountability
  • Comfortable working with team members spread across multiple locations and time zones, in a matrix environment

Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the U.S. is required as the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.

Salary Range: $150,000.00 to $225,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
