American Association for Cancer Research is Hiring a Director, Marketing Near Philadelphia, PA

Overview

The Director of Marketing for the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) will assume leadership in and responsibility for the creation and execution of the AACR’s marketing strategies and tactics. Inherent in this position is the gathering and analysis of member, nonmember end-user, and marketplace data to establish the future direction for marketing and positioning of AACR products and services through a variety of mechanisms for the intended audiences. Such audiences include the diverse worldwide community of cancer scientists, physicians, other health care professionals, members of the public interested in cancer, and policy makers and advocates for cancer research, early detection, treatment, and prevention. This individual will also be responsible for targeted and segmented marketing of AACR to its member and nonmember base, the international cancer community, and the general public, marketing AACR as the most prestigious, unique voice and leader in all subfields of cancer research.

The Director of Marketing will work closely with the Chief Marketing Officer to develop and implement AACR’s comprehensive marketing strategy and will work collaboratively with other AACR divisions/departments to convey and enhance AACR’s position as the world’s premier cancer research association. 

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate successful marketing strategies that are consistent with AACR’s unique mission, values, and strategic plan.
  • Provide direction and creative input into AACR’s multifaceted marketing programs that promote all of its activities through integrated processes, including traditional, digital, and social media marketing venues.
  • Increase AACR’s visibility among key constituencies.
  • Develop and oversee the creation and implementation of an overarching marketing strategic plan along with short- and long-term individualized marketing plans in cooperation with each division/department.
  • Conceptualize and implement market research studies to determine member and/or user satisfaction with AACR programs and services to analyze results and measure success. Work with division/department leaders to consider revisions to strategic directions and marketing plans based on the results of these studies and the changing environment as necessary.
  • Tailor messaging and delivery mechanisms for targeted outreach to various audiences through a wide variety of outlets, ranging from web-based marketing (including social media, digital ad placement, website promotion, and email marketing programs) to more traditional methods such as direct mail, meeting exhibits, advertisements, brochures, and postcards.
  • Provide weekly updates on marketing plan progress to the Chief Marketing Officer, and develop reports to gauge progress of campaigns.
  • Work with the Chief Marketing Officer and marketing staff to develop annual marketing budgets for the Association that are consistent with marketing plans agreed upon with each division/department.
  • Develop and manage a full service marketing department within the Marketing, Creative, and Multimedia Production Division to ensure that it meets the overall needs of the Association. Maximize internal productivity of the marketing department staff while enhancing and promoting communication, collaboration, and coordination with other divisions/departments.
  • Work with the leadership of the Communications and Public Relations Division to promote and build awareness of AACR’s activities, and ensure that messaging to various constituencies is consistent and that cross-departmental activities are properly coordinated.
  • Interact with Communications and other divisions/departments to ensure that AACR Website content is regularly refreshed with engaging information that reflects the priorities and various activities of the Association.
  • Utilize tools and tactics for search engine optimization in coordination with the Communications and the IT Department.
  • Work with the Membership Department to ensure the promotion of the Association’s recruitment and retention efforts. Prepare content for various constituencies and distribute it through a variety of channels to promote the benefits of membership and participation in AACR activities.
  • Work with the Program Development Department and AACR conferences leadership to identify audiences for, create awareness of, and drive abstract submissions and attendance at AACR conferences, meetings, and educational workshops.
  • Work with the Scientific Awards and Grants Administration staffs to market their services and promote the funding opportunities to members and nonmembers.
  • Work with the Executive Office staff for AACR’s Scientific Working Groups to promote their activities.
  • Work with the Survivor and Patient Advocacy staff in Washington, DC to build awareness of and participation in the partnership between scientists and individuals from the cancer survivor and patient advocacy communities.
  • Collaborate with the Publisher and Publications Marketing and Sales staff to support the marketing of AACR journals.
  • Collaborate with the AACR Foundation’s Chief Philanthropic Officer and staff in the planning and execution of marketing activities to support the Foundation’s efforts to expand public outreach and generate philanthropic revenue.
  • Support the Human Resources Department by developing AACR informational materials and hosting events for employers and job seekers.
  • Qualifications

    Essential Skills and Knowledge:

    • Outstanding written and oral communication skills including expertise in writing marketing-centric copy.
    • Proven leadership, project management, and strong interpersonal skills.
    • A successful track record of providing proactive thought leadership, creative input, and innovative solutions to meet established goals and benchmarks.
    • Experience with developing and delivering strategic, results-oriented marketing campaigns in accordance with deadlines.
    • Expertise in market research, development of customer surveys, and marketing data analysis.
    • Experience in managing, inspiring, and mentoring the marketing staff in a fast-paced environment where work activities and deliverables are dependent on collaboration with a diverse group of creative, technical, and business experts, both internally and externally.
    • Expert knowledge of Salesforce, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and other marketing related applications with the ability to identify areas of success and opportunities for growth.
    • Expertise in developing and managing marketing budgets.
    • Strong track record promoting online information resources, conferences, membership, and associated activities.
    • Independent, self-motivated, and detail-oriented execution of duties including a strong work ethic and effective management skills

    Education and Training: 

    • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Advertising, Business, or related field. Advanced degree preferred

    Computer Knowledge: 

    • Salesforce Database Management, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook). Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and other creative programs a plus.
    • Knowledge of Association software systems, such as Fonteva, is desirable

    Work Experience:

    • Minimum of 15 years of leadership experience in marketing, preferably with experience in not-for-profit organizations.
    • Knowledge of or familiarity with life science organizations or cancer-related charities a plus.
