Construction Trainer
Alliance for Community Empowerment (ACE) is a community-based organization in the West San Fernando Valley that provides education, workforce development, job placement, gang intervention, re-entry services, mentoring and counseling services. Since its inception, ACE has assisted over 1,400 individuals overcome barriers by addressing the core issues facing their low-income communities. ACE’s fundamental belief is that when people are provided with the right tools, positive role models and opportunity, they can transform their lives and their communities.
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS: 
The Construction Trainer teaches trainees basic construction skills necessary to do commercial and residential construction utilizing established technical and safety curricula leading to certification; provides job readiness workshops and encourages the development of positive work ethics. The Construction Trainer will provide classroom instruction, hands-on work experience, and modify the Construction and Work Readiness curriculum and materials as required to meet trainee and program needs. Additionally, the trainer will expose trainees to local unions and prepare trainees to enter into a union apprenticeship. 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Possesses at least entry-level knowledge of the role and duties of the position; understands the department’s roles and is able to meet the expectations of the position for work schedule, punctuality, attendance, time management, productivity, and quality of work
  • Operates as a reliable, flexible team player who works well with minimal supervision; has a good work ethic; is able to work effectively with team members demonstrating creativity, initiative, adaptability, and the ability to accept accountability and critical feedback. Is receptive to learning and responsive to supervision. Follows established procedures and is able to contribute to their improvement with a solution-oriented approach. Willing to take direction and learn from others
  • Possesses the technical and software skills to perform the duties of the position (including Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office)
  • Possesses the interpersonal skills needed to promote a safe, positive, and inclusive professional work environment conducive to effective service delivery; communicates effectively both orally and in writing 
  • Is sensitive to community, cultural and personal dignity of program participants and is able to successfully engage, assess, and plan services for participants typical of the program’s target population. Recognizes appropriate boundaries and limitations on interactions with program participants and their families and the need to maintain professional standards and practices. Is familiar with standard approaches to accurate participant record keeping, including timely charting, notation formats, content limitations, and confidentiality practices
  • Possesses knowledge of programs, regulations, and procedures regarding human services, social services, justice, and workforce development
  • Demonstrates cultural competence/cultural humility in community relations and service delivery
  • Able to educate, motivate, and inspire trainees
  • Knowledge of current green construction techniques to incorporate into all lesson planning
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Attends and participates in all mandatory meetings
  • Fosters positive relationships with community members and partner organizations
  • Participate in cultural and community building activities/events
  • Works to incorporate into organizational culture best practices for diversity, equity, and inclusion, restorative justice, and trauma-informed care 
  • Performs outreach and marketing duties to recruit participants and educate the community on ACE Services.
  • Carries out intake and eligibility determinations and makes appropriate referrals when the applicant is not eligible for ACE services; conducts participant assessments leading to enrollment; completes and updates participant service plans 
  • Arranges and participates in participants’ family meetings, service meetings, team meetings, etc. and coordinates wrap-around services with other providers; provides transportation of participants to meet program goals
  • Organizes, coordinates, prepares, and delivers skills-based workshops for participants
  • Enters data into participant databases; assists in the writing of periodic program reports.
  • Provide ongoing engaging hands-on training
  • Facilitates classroom content related to construction and workforce development, and instruct participants effectively
  • Works with a team to develop a cohort training schedule each term
  • Implements strategies to meet the goals and objective of the organization’s pre-apprenticeship preparation construction program
  • Schedules, coordinates and monitors the progress and quality of all construction--related activities & daily attendance
  • Ensures adequate and appropriate construction safety procedures are in place, taught and enforced in a consistent manner
  • Utilizes the Multi-Craft Core Curriculum (MC3) to prepare participants for certification and access to Building Trades’ registered apprenticeship programs
  • Prepares participants for OSHA-10 certification in worksite safety practices
  • Regularly transports participants to and from approved job-site and provides off-site supervision
  • Keeps track of cohort’s progress, completion of training hours, certifications, and submits elective grades on time
  • Maintain vehicle log by tracking mileage, maintenance and repair needs, and ensuring van is ready for future use 
  • Other duties as assigned 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in the construction industry (framing, drywall installation, window and door installation, flooring, finish carpentry, basic plumbing, electrical and roofing)
  • Minimum of 2 years working in a training environment
  • Industry recognized trainer certification preferred
  • 5 years of Union experience preferred
  • Spanish language skills, verbal and written preferred
  • Possess a current California Driver’s License, clean DMV record & adequate auto insurance. 
  • Must submit to a Department of Justice Criminal background check 
  • Initial TB employment clearance required
BENEFITS:
  • The anticipated pay range for candidates who will work in California is $63,000 to $72,333 annually. The offered pay to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to years of experience within the job, years of experience within the required industry, education, etc.
  • Health, Vision and Dental Insurance (at no cost to you starting after 90 days) - Retirement Plan with employer contributions at 2% of your annual salary
  • $100,000 life insurance (at no cost to you) 
  • Short and Long-Term Disability insurance (at no cost to you) 
  • 1-week vacation time (at one-year anniversary) 
    • Vacation will then accrue to two weeks vacation after completion of 2 years working at ACE and three weeks of vacation time after 5 years of employment
  • 6 sick days a year (eligible to use after 6 months) 
  • 15 paid holidays
