Addiction Services and Supports, Office of is Hiring a Research Scientist 3 (Prevention) Near Albany, NY

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have:
1) Permanent status as Research Scientist 2 (SG-22), and be interested in reassignment, OR
2) A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field* and four years of such experience
Substitutions to #2:
  • A Master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience
  • Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.
  • Appropriate fields include biostatistics, sociology, computer science, epidemiology, public health, etc.
Duties Description
The Research Scientist 3 will provide technical assistance and training for the division’s substance use/misuse prevention science to practice initiatives and statewide policies to operationalize data-driven decision making for prevention services. The position serves as the Principal Investigator for SAMHSA’s Partnership for Success Grant and oversees evidence-based programs, practices, and environmental change strategies for the prevention of substance use /misuse. The candidate is the scientific lead for the statewide Prevention Resource Centers’ mission to translate science to practice for communities. In addition, the candidate will undertake tasks required by the research team, including database management, programming, statistical analysis, and creating performance feedback systems.
Candidate for this position should be:
  • Knowledgeable of public health practices, social science research methods, data analysis and peer review process for evaluating public health interventions.
  • Experienced in applying SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework, Environmental Change Strategies for Prevention and using data for community-based prevention planning and evaluation.
  • Proficient in the use of SAS or SPSS, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Power Point. Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau is desired.
  • Can organize, manage, and analyze quantitative and qualitative data using descriptive statistics
  • Have excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. This means having the ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.
  • Skilled in presenting data visuals to wide audiences, especially those without a data background
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and critique empirical findings.
