OVERVIEW
Assists the Coordinator in managing the medical care function of a licensed mental health facility operating on a 24/7 basis providing individuals in
psychiatric/behavioral crisis highly intensive mental health services and temporary residential care to and/or referral and involving psychiatric,
neuropsychiatric, psychological, behavioral and other functional assessments; stabilization management; medication management; intensive care and case
management services and training of and support to families, other caregivers and service providers. Work is performed under general supervision and is
guided by agency policies and procedures, quality assurance, public and private payor guidelines, professional practices and including ethical standards
related to client interactions, Board of Pharmacy and Board of Nursing regulations, state and federal licensure and accreditation regulations and guidelines.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Schedules, trains, supervises and evaluates program nursing staff.
2. Provides direct care including assessment, stabilization, intervention, medical detoxification and/or referral.
3. Supervises resident medication management and monitoring and related documentation compliance to state and federal regulations and guidelines.
4. Conducts individual intake, follow‑up interviews, and performs physical, psychological and general casework assessments.
5. Performs client financial assessments and reimbursable service determinations.
6. Coordinates and monitors services and placements including intensive care with other agencies, providers, and consumer's family.
7. Prepares service plans, correspondence, reports, and maintains case records.
8. Schedules and monitors psychiatric services as necessary with consulting psychiatrist.
9. Schedules and monitors medically managed withdrawal services as necessary with consulting health care provider.
10. Assesses readiness of individuals to transition to clinic-based and other traditional services and facilitates coordinates transfer of care.
11. Provides routine examinations such as measuring blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight and blood glucose readings
12. Dispenses medications and administers injections.
13. Develops, implements, trains and enforces policy and procedures.
14. Provides resident and resident's family medication management and behavioral support training.
15. Provides supervision to the medical function of the crisis stabilization program on an after-hours on-call basis.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the principles, standards, practices and techniques related to psychiatric nursing; thorough knowledge of nursing practices,
pharmacology and psychological/physical effects of alcohol and drug use/abuse/withdrawal; thorough knowledge of Board of Pharmacy and Board of Nursing
regulations relating to prescription drug storage, administration and documentation; thorough knowledge of disease concept of chemical dependency,
communicable disease concepts and other infectious disease issues; thorough knowledge of the laws and legal procedures relating to hospital admission;
thorough knowledge of the medical procedures, treatment providers and other agencies in service to the individual population; thorough knowledge of the
financial and benefit coverage policies and procedures of private third party insurers serving the region and of Medicaid and Medicare; considerable
knowledge of local community resources and service delivery systems, including support services, eligibility criteria and intake processes, termination criteria
and procedures, and generic community resources. considerable knowledge of social casework management, including need assessment and supportive
level counseling; considerable knowledge of the theories, practices, techniques, treatment modalities, intervention and support programs related to the care
and treatment of the mental health crisis population, and the substance abusive, mentally and/or emotionally disabled populations and individuals with co
occurring MH/SA disorders; considerable knowledge of service plan development, training and evaluation. ability to establish and maintain rapport with the
individual population; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff of other private and public agencies and organizations; ability
to plan the work of, train, supervise and evaluate subordinates; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to collect, compile and evaluate
electronically sourced data and prepare reports; ability to function calmly in stressful situations ability to conduct effective interviews, observe, assess and
record individual behaviors and functioning and develop treatment and service plans.
TYPICAL EDUCATION, TRAINING AND WORK EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and considerable professional experience in psychiatric nursing serving the mentally ill, emotionally disabled and/or substance
abusive population and some supervisory experience.
LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS
State Certified Registered Nurse.
Valid Virginia Driver's License
current First Aid and CPR certification.
