Respiratory Therapists provide care for patients that have trouble breathing; for example, from a chronic respiratory disease, such as asthma or emphysema. They also provide emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, stroke, drowning, or shock. Patients receiving care from a respiratory therapist range in age from the premature infant to the elderly. In some hospitals, respiratory therapists are involved in related areas, such as counseling people on how to stop smoking and diagnosing breathing problems for people with sleep apnea. Respiratory Therapists restore patients pulmonary function, help to alleviate pain, and support life by planning and administering medically prescribed respiratory therapy.
Qualifications:Qualifications
- Associate degree in applied science or Respiratory Therapy
- Current NYS Respiratory Therapist License
- Current BCLS required, ACLS preferred
- Graduate of an approved respiratory therapy program and passed the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) examination and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) examination
- NYFD G-71 certificate preferred
Schedule
- All positions are in hospitals and nursing homes. These facilities are open 24 hours/7 days each week.
- General shift availability:
- Days (7a-3p or 8a-4p)
- Evenings (3p-11p or 4p-12a)
- Nights (11p-7a or 12a-8a)
- Every other weekend is usually required for all positions.
COVID-19 vaccination is required.
