POSITION DESCRIPTION

Join our dynamic team at the College for Creative Studies (CCS), a beacon of creativity and innovation located in the vibrant heart of Detroit. This position offers the unique opportunity to influence how art and design education is delivered; ensuring that it not only meets but also exceeds the demands of today’s digital age. CCS is seeking a dynamic, versatile, and experienced Instructional Designer skilled in designing and supporting online and blended learning environments. This individual will play a critical role in enhancing the educational experiences of CCS students, faculty, and staff. The Instructional Designer will assist in the planning, design, and maintenance of online training resources, collaborating closely with faculty to develop high-quality online courses and ensure effective instructional practices within our Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Course and Program Design

  • Design, develop, and implement online programs, courses, and short courses in collaboration with faculty and other subject matter experts, adhering to college standards of engagement, accessibility, technology, and rigor.
  • Advance the institutional strategy for online pedagogy and ensure all course development adheres to ADA guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the instructional design team to develop, edit, and maintain courses, incorporating best practices and current instructional design theories.

Supporting Online Environments and Professional Development

  • Support and advise faculty on online pedagogy, helping them to create engaging and effective online learning environments.
  • Develop and facilitate professional development activities for faculty and staff, focusing on the effective use of Canvas and best practices for online teaching.
  • Write and customize content and job aids for various training modalities, including online learning, live classroom sessions, virtual workshops, video, audio, and mobile.
  • Provide quality assurance support, including course reviews and testing, to ensure courses are effective and meet institutional standards.
  • Enhance learning and teaching through strategic use of the LMS (Canvas), ensuring it meets user needs and enhances educational outcomes.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate and present at both internal and external meetings, workshops, and training events as directed by supervisors, contributing to project discussions and representing the Office of Educational Technology Innovation (ET I).
  • Contribute to internal projects that enhance the core offerings and infrastructure of ET I.
  • Represent ET I at key college events such as New Student Orientation, New Faculty Orientation, Staff Assembly, and Faculty Assembly.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support the department’s goals and initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A graduate degree in an appropriate discipline
  • Proven experience of instructional design for online learning – minimum two (2) years
  • In-depth knowledge of innovation in online pedagogy, with a broad understanding of new and emerging technologies
  • In-depth knowledge of learning, teaching, assessment methods and pedagogical practices in higher education, art and design preferred
  • Demonstrable experience in planning/scheduling project work in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrable experience facilitating and delivering training to an academic audience
  • Working knowledge of learning management systems, Canvas preferred
  • The ability to manage the balance between deadlines, quality, and shifting priorities
  • Excellent and delightful interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a team leader and colleague

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in a professional office and college campus environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to maintain a stationary position, use a computer and other office equipment, and communicate effectively in person, by phone, and virtually. Frequent interaction with others, including staff, faculty, students and third parties is required. The employee may occasionally be required to move files or other objects weighing up to 25 pounds, including from low and high places. The ability to move around within the office and between buildings on campus, attend off-site meetings and events, and travel between Ford Campus site to Taubman Center site are required. CCS will make reasonable accommodations that will allow individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

ABOUT ET I

The Educational Technology Innovation department (ET I) at the College for Creative Studies supports faculty in using technology effectively in both classroom and online settings. They act as a centralized resource to evaluate new and emerging technologies, and offer training and ongoing support to faculty on how to use technology in a student-centered approach.

ET I provides support for a range of tools, including Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), Zoom, Simple Syllabus, EvaluationKit, and integration of Google and Adobe tools within Canvas. Their focus is on how technology can enhance teaching and learning, amplifying the work of faculty and students.

ET I also provides guidance and support for classes and programs offered through online or hybrid modalities, as well as for in-person courses that use Canvas to enhance student learning. This involves creating standards, processes, support, and professional development to ensure that students have high quality online learning experiences.
