Primary Purpose
The Industrial Hygienist, through academic training and experience, provide a systemic approach to recognize, evaluate, and control occupational exposures for the protection of the workforce. Using technical knowledge recommends appropriate control measures to minimize risk to occupational exposure which can be acute or chronic in nature that can potentially lead to disabling injuries. Industrial Hygienist typically takes on exposure assessment and projects that are compliance related and are driven by regulatory scrutiny.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Technical Expert.(1) Plans, manages and conducts multiple industrial hygiene exposure assessment using NIOSH sampling strategies to identify and check for the presence of chemical agents, biological agents, physical agents, or ergonomic stresses.(2) Works with outside industrial hygiene firms to ensure appropriate sampling strategy, exposure assessment methodology, and risk assessment are done correctly and according to professional standards.(3) Evaluates proposed or currently used products, tools, equipment, processes, facilities changes, and construction projects with regard to health effects, hazard potential and regulatory compliance.(4) Evaluates test studies and vendor information on hazardous products and processes with regard to health effects, hazard potential, and compliance with applicable laws and standards.(5) Provides solid recommendations to management to manage and reduce occupational exposure risks. These recommendations will include engineering controls, administrative controls, or personal protective equipment. Controls are cost-effective, practical solutions.(6) Responds to request and investigate occupational exposures, injuries, or other incidents involving chemical, physical, or biological agents; make necessary recommendations and corrective actions to minimize occupational health risks.(7) Provides tools and tactics to clients, which leads to improvement of their safety performance.
- Program Management Skills.(1) Develops project scope, project deliverable, project goals and objectives for regulatory compliance and company policy driven programs. Assignments reflect completed projects, not segments.(2) Leads and establishes cross function teams for small to medium size projects.(3) Assignments are self initiated with broad objectives.(4) Establishes appropriate contracts and initiating work with outside consultants if necessary.
- Presentation, Interpersonal Skills, and Conceptual Skills. Develops and maintains a strong partnership among client organizations to identify and prioritize safety and health needs. Proactively consults with clients to diagnose and analyze safety and health related problems or needs. Recommends and advocates proactive solutions when appropriate. Applies business skills to manage complex safety and health programs. Analyzes evaluation data, report findings, and make appropriate recommendations to stakeholders based on available information and best practice standards. Analyze the characteristics of existing and emerging safety and health technologies and their use in an occupational environment. Assess benefits of existing and new technologies. Specifies the capabilities of existing and emerging technologies to enhance existing safety and health programs and minimize occupational risks. Provide presentations to all levels of employees (Senior management to front line employees).Develop communication documents to inform employees and the public about safety and health related issues. Provide tools, training and tactics to clients, which lead to improvement of their safety
- Legal Expert.(1) Interprets proposed and final state and federal rules, regulations, and laws to determine impact to the company and develops appropriate programs and procedures for compliance.(2) Represent the Company at governmental agency meetings and hearings and prepare and maintain reports, records, files, and correspondence to internal activity and external regulations that may have an impact on the Company.(3) Can be required to be a company expert in legal proceedings such as workers' compensation.
- Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).
$81600 - $122400 / year
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health, biological or physical science or engineering is required.
Experience
- Experience with statistical analysis tools and methods for evaluating exposure risks to biological, physical, chemical agents as well as ergonomic stressors is required.
- 2-5 years of industrial hygiene experience in construction, chemical, and/or industrial operations is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Written communication skills required for writing, editing and evaluating technical materials, training presentation materials, and coursework of all types.
- Project planning and management skills essential.
- Applied Safety and Health Management techniques are required.
- Ability to influence, negotiate, and coach in a clear concise manner with positive outcomes .
- Ability to deal with conflicts.
