MAINTENANCE WORKER - PUBLIC WORKS
This is a full-time position and receives all benefits afforded to regular employees.
Summary: This position is responsible for performing various semi-skilled work associated with landscaping, road construction and maintenance at either one of the following locations: the Mainland, and on Saint Simons Island for Public Works.
Essential Job Functions: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Performs various tasks involving, roadside maintenance, road construction, building and custodial maintenance for the Community Buildings, or landscaping projects.
- Patches potholes in road surfaces and cross-cuts in roads for drainage pipes; rakes and disposes of grass clippings, brush and other materials; blows leaves/debris from sidewalks; picks up and disposes of debris/litter from grounds and parking lots; removes dead animals from roadways; digs holes/trenches and shovels materials; repairs washouts on road shoulders, and at driveway pipes.
- Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department projects which may include a utility truck/vehicle, dump truck, front end loader, forklift, side-arm mower, riding mower, push mower, weed eater, edger, blower, hedge trimmer, generator, pressure washer, pole saw, shovel, pick, sledge hammer, level, or ladder.
- Performs general/manual tasks associated with department projects; replaces parts; installs signs; digs holes or trenches; climbs ladders; sets up or arranges equipment/facilities for department programs/activities; lifts/moves furniture, equipment, and heavy materials; assists with cleanup following storms or emergency situations.
- Inspects/tests machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations; makes adjustments, repairs or replacements; reports problem situations.
- Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning project work areas, or cleaning shop; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
- Communicates with supervisor, other departments, employees, contractors, utility companies, vendors/suppliers, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Transports, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 2 months previous experience and/or training involving general building maintenance, general building trades, road construction/maintenance, grounds maintenance, equipment operation, and/or maintenance work in area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Certifications and/or Licenses: Valid Driver's License required. Valid Commerical Driver's License (CDL) preferred.
