What does an Intensive Learning Center Teacher at Prospect Hill do? The Intensive Learning Center Teacher performs as a lead teacher for developing and implementing programming for students with severe to moderate disabilities, adapting curriculum and providing specially designed instruction across content areas using multi-sensory teaching, differentiated strategies, including use of modified content, methodology, and performance criteria as needed for students with a wide variety of disabilities, such ASD, Intellectual Impairment, Health, and Communication Disorders. Provides inclusion and pull-outs services in the Learning Center with explicit skills building that can be generalized to the general education classroom. Essential Responsibilities:
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
  • Collaborates with grade level classroom teachers, other special education teachers, and specialists to provide comprehensive, integrated and effective services to assigned students
  • Promotes and assists in the implementation of research-based strategies including develop and use of positive behavior supports to ensure the transition and generalization of students’ social emotional and academic goals within the regular education environment and throughout the school setting
  • Develops functional life skills goals and programming that incorporates functional reading, functional math, community outings with travel training
  • Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals (e.g. behavioral, social/emotional, communication skills, academic, functional life skills needs, etc.) for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration
  • Serves as contact person for designated caseload, including completion of all associated paperwork (monitoring student performance, writing IEPs/progress reports, etc.), participation in the Team process (participating in Annual Reviews, conferencing w/ parents/Team members, etc.), and maintenance of communication between teachers, specialists, families, and any outside providers
  • Uses a multi-disciplinary approach to gather various sources of information for progress monitoring in order to routinely implement data-based decision-making practices to guide instruction and lesson planning
  • Works with Early Childhood Campus 3rd grade special educators and Middle School 7th grade special educators for smooth transitioning to campuses and ensure aligned programming from grade to grade
  • Plans and supervises assignments for teaching assistants and/or behavior therapists
  • Attends established traditional school sponsored activities (e.g., Back to School Night, Open House, programs, activities)
  • Coordinates student and staff schedules to ensure compliance with IEP requirements and the efficient use of resources
What Knowledge, Skills, and Experiences are needed for this role?
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred
  • Current Massachusetts licensure in Special Education (Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities or Severe Disabilities, K-8 or 5-12)
  • Comprehensive understanding of state and federal regulations pertaining to Special Education
