What do Math Specialists do at Prospect Hill Academy?Math Specialists are critical teacher-leaders in supporting best practice in math instruction, especially in the area of math intervention. A Math specialist will provide research-based math intervention to small groups of students at multiple grade levels. This will include data analysis to determine need, design of high-quality intervention, and effective progress monitoring. A math specialist will model and coach classroom teachers in these areas, as well as be a leader at the campus level in designing and implementing an effective multi-tiered system of support for mathematics learning.Essential Functions:
  • Analyzes individual student data to clearly identify and articulate current progress, including specific strengths and needs
  • Using this analysis, designs and delivers effective direct service to students in identified areas of need; carefully monitors progress for each individual student receiving service; adapts instructional plans based on progress monitoring to ensure growth for each student during intervention cycle
  • Supports classroom teachers to understand individual student data and learning progress, and then to adapt their daily classroom instruction to include effective Tier 1 supports
  • Analyzes grade level data to determine overall patterns of strength and need, and supports classroom teachers in their understanding and use of this data to improve student learning
  • Creates effective data displays and tracking systems to support grade level teams with both data analysis and progress monitoring (at the individual, class and grade level)
  • Supports the campus with the design and delivery of a multi-tiered system of support that effectively moves students toward identified grade level mathematics goals, including data analysis to determine the effectiveness of the system
  • Supports grade levels with designing effective strategic groupings based on current data, and then designing effective instructional approaches and supports to meet identified needs
  • Researches, teaches and models instructional best practices to address the needs of students who are not yet successful in mathematics
  • Provides ongoing training and feedback in the use of assessment tools and strategies, and coaches teachers on how to use the resulting data to design effective instruction
  • Builds effective relationships with students and faculty in service of continuous improvement goals
  • Develops expertise in the mathematics curricula (EngageNY) and the instructional approaches used at the grade level
  • Selects and/or designs instructional materials to meet student needs; maintains an organized system and accessible location for the storage and circulation of materials; maintains a comprehensive inventory of instructional materials and resources
  • Staggers work hours 2-3 days per week to provide after-school tutoring

  • Assists with planning and delivery of content workshops and informational sessions for parents/guardians
  • Partners with campus leaders, instructional coaches and curriculum coaches to support continuous improvement in tiered systems of support and mathematics instruction
  • Provides training and/or guided practice for teachers in use of data, assessment tools, curriculum or instructional strategies
  • May serve as a member of campus or district instructional leadership teams
  • Additional responsibilities and tasks requested or assigned by manager
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:
  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience, with a record of successfully impacting student achievement
  • Master’s Degree preferred; Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Deep understanding of mathematics standards, practices and pedagogical approaches
  • Strong understanding of the current research on mathematics learning and instruction and its relevance to daily instructional practice
  • Strong understanding of the principles and practices of multi-tiered systems of support, especially in mathematics
  • Proven track record of providing effective small group mathematics intervention
  • Experience with screening tools and diagnostic assessment practices
  • Commitment to Prospect Hill Academy's educational mission, vision, and values

  • Well-developed and demonstrated cultural proficiency
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and facilitate clearly in oral and written form with staff and families
  • Passionate about collaboration with colleagues and supervisor; proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues, including the ability to nurture a community of adult learners
  • Proficiency in the effective use of data to determine and monitor progress, including using and creating spreadsheets or other relevant data tracking tools
  • Demonstrated ability to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Growth mindset and a commitment to reflective practice
  • Fluency in Google suite of applications
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms to stoop, kneel, or crouch
  • Regularly required to operate a computer and other office equipment with hands and arms and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.
