Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Professional Writing Tutors work in the Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA) as part-time (less than 18 hours/week), non-benefited contractors, with an hourly rate commensurate with experience. Day, evening and weekend hours are available.
Writing tutors work one-on-one by appointment with students seeking writing help for all subjects and academic disciplines. Writing tutors should demonstrate strong skills in grammar and written mechanics; possess knowledge of the writing process; recognize higher order concerns such as thesis, organization and assignment relevance; communicate effectively with students without editing or re-writing papers; and be familiar with APA and MLA style formats. Tutors may be asked to prepare and present workshops during their scheduled shifts, or help prepare in-house resources.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
CASA is a busy office with constant foot traffic and many professional and student employees. Professional Writing Tutors will work one-on-one, by appointment, with students in a centralized tutoring area where other tutoring services are being performed.
Requirements:
All applicants should bring:
* Prior experience tutoring, teaching or working in a related field (i.e. journalism, publications)
* Strong skills in grammar and written mechanics
* Knowledge of the writing process, including higher order concerns such as thesis, organization and assignment relevance
* Excellent communication and listening skills, guiding students without editing or re-writing papers
* Familiarity with APA and MLA style formats
* Experience in workshop preparation and/or classroom presentations on the writing process
* Commitment to helping students with diverse skill sets in writing
Required Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in English, Composition Rhetoric or related field
Preferred Qualifications:
* Enrollment in a master's or PhD program for English, Composition Rhetoric or related field
* Previous teaching or tutoring experience
* Experience working with students whose English and writing process are influenced by a second
