• Expertly plans work sequence, repair methods, equipment needs and material requirements from engineering drawings, applicable specifications, airframes service changes, bulletins, contractors and vendor drawings and repair manuals, examines and evaluates damage, wear, corrosion, misalignments and other deficiencies.
• Expertly performs major structural repairs and modifications involving critical structural members and skins.
• Expert in removal, replacement or repairs all or portions of skins, ribs, spars, bulkheads, fittings, forgings, brackets, clips, support splice members, etc., by fitting, aligning, drilling and riveting.
• Highly Proficient in laying out and fabricating parts such as splices, reinforcements, inspection plates, doublers, surface or flush patches, clips, angles, brackets, etc., and frequently manufactures complex ribs, bulkheads, stringers, skins, repair parts, etc., when none are available.
• Expertly removes corrosion by mechanical means and chemically treats the affected areas.
• Highly proficient in prototyping new changes and modifications and performs analytical rework as prescribed by engineering.
• Highly proficient in the removal and replacement of damaged or corroded fittings, rivets, screws, bolts and other types of fasteners.
• Expert in the Manufacturing and installation of reinforcements and patches on ribs, skins, stringers, formers, spars, fittings, and other aircraft structural components.
• Highly proficient in the ability to fabricate from technical drawings and documentation. to tolerances of 10 thousandths of an inch.
• Assist other trades within the LSI Pensacola complex during the manufacture and repair of training systems.
• Drills and reams holes for bushings, stress relieves scratches by burnishing or buffing.
• Must be capable of safely handling government furnished equipment and materials.
• Must be available to work a standard weekly schedule with overtime as required.
• Performs other duties as required.

• Requires expert comprehension in reading, interpreting engineering drawings, repair manuals and related technical data and thorough knowledge of and skill in the use of tools and techniques of rework and repair of sheet metal fabricated structures.
• Requires thorough knowledge of shop mathematics, ability to lay out, form, shape, and/or fit and assemble multi-contoured parts using such precision instruments as micrometers, calipers, dividers, dial indicators, levels, protractors, clinometers, gages and rulers, and such metal working tools as hand and powered sheers, brakes, rolls, mallets, forming blocks, hand saws, grinders, sanders, files, a wide variety of pneumatic drills, rivet guns, and blind fastener tools.
• Requires a thorough knowledge of aircraft structural hardware (including applications and techniques of preparation and installation) such as solid, tubular, and explosive rivets, standard and special aircraft bolts, nuts, and washers, anchor nuts, Hi-Loks, dzus fasteners, screws, airlock and fasteners, and variety of other structural fasteners.
• Requires expert knowledge of and the ability to detect various types of corrosion such as surface corrosion, galvanic or dissimilar metal corrosion, pitting corrosion, and fretting corrosion.
• Requires an expert knowledge of corrosion treatment, repair methods and proper tools used in corrosion removal.
• Requires expert knowledge and probable effects of various loads and stresses applied to structures such as compression, tensile and shear, and the ability to recognize an overloaded or over stressed condition.
• The aircraft sheet metal mechanic must rely on advance trade knowledge and the ability to improvise trade techniques.

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Five (5) years’ experience with an aircraft sheet metal mechanic background in commercial or military aircraft manufacturing/repair/installation required.
