Position Title Perinatal Sonographer

Position Summary / Career Interest: The Perinatal Sonographer II utilizes high frequency sound waves along with color and spectral Doppler ultrasound to assist in the monitoring and growth during pregnancy. The Sonographers within KU's OB/GYN MFM Department are leading the region with their practices.
Responsibilities: -Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a physician including positions patients for the proper view of the affected area; selects the appropriate scan images to be recorded; obtains essential information from patients, medical records, and previous scans for clinical correlation.
-Instructs patients about the proper physiological requirements for the procedure; helps patient transfer to exam table and ensures adequate patient immobilization to perform the scan; knows how to change scanning parameters to improve a scan.
-Obtains diagnostic sonographic images by scanning the appropriate body part of the patient with the transducer; provides documentation of ultrasound exam sufficient for physicians to interpret.
-Assists physicians with ultrasound guided procedures. May participate in student and physician education.
-Maintains work area to include medical supplies for procedures.

-Competencies
-Sonographer expectations and experience to obtain Level II
-Scanning independently (including multiple gestations)
- Travel to off-site rotation
- Inpatient scanning rotation
- Weekend and holiday call rotation
-Proficiency in preparing for and guiding the following ultrasound guided needle procedures - Amniocentesis and Chorionic Sampling (CVS)
- Must complete a minimum of 4 annually with at least 50% done clinically ( vs simulation lab)
- Competency checklist for:
- Normal maternal AND fetal anatomy recognition through image/chart audits
- Fetal wellness ultrasound assessment
- Normal and abnormal Doppler testing
- Amnio and CVS (proper site, documentation, maintain sterile field, and visualization of needle)
-Regular participation in self-directed and ongoing continuing
-Completion of sterile field competency (Lippincott)

JOB REQUIREMENTS Required: -High School Education
-Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program which meets requirements by the -American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (A.R.D.M.S)
-Active OB/GYN RDMS certification or RDMS credential must be earned within 90 days of hire
-Basic Life Support certification
-All requirements of a level I and:
- FMF 1st Trimester Screening Certification/Nuchal
- Translucency (NT) Certification (must be obtained/renewed within 90 days of hire)
- Cervical Length Education and Review (CLEAR) Certification (must be obtained/renewed within 90 days of hire)
- Minimum 18 months active Perinatal Sonography experience
- Experience and proficient in the following needle-guided procedures: Amniocentesis, Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
(All new hires who meet the level II JD requirements must complete a competency checklist for level I within 60 days (about 2 months) of hire.)
-Read and Write English
-Driving, computer skills
Preferred: -Bachelor's degree
-Experience in an Academic setting
-Credentialed RDMS in Abdomen Specialty Exam
-Credentialed RVT in Vascular
-Fetal Echocardiography Board Certification (After 12 months of active level II perinatal experience, sonographers can apply for a compensation adjustment once they pass Fetal Echo boards)
