Contract Details & Requirements:
  • 7:45 am -4:15 pm Monday - Friday
  • 13-week travel contract
  • High-Risk OB/Maternal Fetal Medicine Practice experience required
  • Minimum 2 years of Perinatal/maternal-fetal medicine sonography experience required
  • OBGYN Certification Required
  • CLEAR Certification Preferred
  • Neuchal Translucency Certification Preferred
Primary Function/General Purpose of Position:
The primary responsibility of this position is to provide specialized high-risk obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound examinations, surveillance of fetal well-being, transvaginal cervical assessments, and assisting the Maternal Fetal Medicine subspecialist in performing diagnostic ultrasound guided surgical procedures. (amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling).
Employment Qualifications:
The knowledge and technical skills of the ultrasonographer must include:
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate of approved 24-month program in radiologic technology.
  • Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (A.R.R.T.).
  • American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification in OB/GYN.
  • NTQR or FMF certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in a high-risk OB/GYN environment, preferably Maternal Fetal Medicine.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Skill in operating GE ultrasound machine and fetal monitoring equipment.
  • Skill in identifying and recording ultrasound images required for a particular study to insure a complete and thorough exam.
  • In-depth knowledge of normal and abnormal physiology and anatomy – both female and fetal.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and their families in difficult and anxious settings and provide appropriate patient care.
  • Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty as appropriate.
  • Work requires the ability to respond to emergency call back.
Performs the following technically oriented functions, which include, but are not limited to:
  • Transfers and positions patients.
  • Applies proper immobilization devices.
  • Sets adjusts, manipulates, and controls a variety of electronic equipment to obtain Ultrasound diagnostic images as required.
  • Provides protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
  • Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
  • Monitors patients throughout examination and assists in cases requiring medical attention.
  • Performs specialized obstetric, fetal and gynecologic diagnostic ultrasound examinations in order to detect fetal anomalies, evaluate fetal anatomy and detect gynecologic anomalies.
  • Assists physician in performance of invasive diagnostic surgical procedures.
  • Performs fetal monitoring (fetal well-being) tests on indicated patients.
  • Provides patient support and education during ultrasound exam.
  • Responsible for the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory. Including maintaining a daily log of patients seen and completing exam billing forms.
  • Operates all equipment properly and with care. Reports immediately any malfunctions, necessary adjustments, or repairs.
  • Following the established AIUM and ACOG guidelines for ultrasound, performs and documents the appropriate images of the study indicated in order to provide the physician with comprehensive views to give an accurate interpretive report.
  • Facilitates lines of communication between the patient and the physician.
  • Maintains Continuing Medical Education credits by attending ultrasound seminars each year. Maintains an active status in American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Society and the Central Virginia Diagnostic Medical Society. Stays current with OB/GYN literature by reading professional journals and books.
  • Orders medical supplies from appropriate vendors in order to maintain a sufficient inventory of medical supplies.
  • Provide consultation to Office Manager and Office Assistant in scheduling patients and accommodating non-routine referrals.
  • Participates in the maintenance of laboratory accreditation.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
Working Conditions:
  • Work requires the ability to position oneself appropriately in order to care for the patients and perform technical duties. Incumbent must be able to access various areas of the department and Hospital.
  • Transports patients in wheelchairs, and on stretchers with necessary IV and O2 attachments.
  • Moves patients to and from table with routine positioning of patients.
  • The individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate coming into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials. Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
