This position is on the staff of the Collections, Exhibitions and Programs Officer in the Librarys Department of Image Collections. The primary purpose of the work in this position is to coordinate the accessioning, housing, and storage of the departments photographs, albums, and other image materials as well as to ensure their safe and orderly storage and ready accessibility to staff and visiting researchers.

**Duties**

The incumbent:

* Coordinates accessioning of new material into departments rare and main study collections; assigns accession numbers for all collections and enters data into department logbook, acquisitions database, and library database; coordinates preliminary processing of main study collections and distribution of processed new accessions to image specialists.

* Manages the departments acquisitions database and assigns staff permissions, creates and generates statistical reports for the department; manages updates and backups for data, handles all technical database issues, plans and oversees future migration of database to updated formats and new systems.

* Compiles and provides information on the size, scope, and storage needs of the departments main and rare collections.

* Creates and maintains departmental shelf inventories, object location lists, and analytics reports for rare materials during processing and tracks their temporary locations outside of the department.

* Assists National Gallery staff or visiting scholars with effective use of the departments collections, providing reference assistance for locating and identifying images.

* Contributes to the development and implementation of the librarys subject and institutional/personal name authority files.

* Monitors developments and changes in international and national name authorities and subject vocabularies and updates bibliographic records and authority files as needed.

* Performs original descriptive and subject cataloging of images from other periods and cultures as needed.

* Monitors the physical condition of the image collections with regard to current photographic conservation principles.

* Applies subject and technical knowledge of current departmental and professional standards for description and access to analog and digital images for the departments participation in regional, national, and international projects such as the Getty Vocabularies and the PHAROS Consortium of photographic archives.

**Specialized Experience Statement****:**

Specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-11 level in the Federal service, coordinating the accessioning, housing, and storage of the departments photographs, albums, and other image materials as well as to ensure their safe and orderly storage and ready accessibility to staff and visiting researchers.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates. Candidates should ensure their resume and submitted materials clearly demonstrate possession of these factors to receive maximum employment consideration.

* Comprehensive knowledge and skill in the application of qualitative/quantitative methods and the ability to perform analyses, assemble and evaluate information for reports and solve administration, communication and other problems sufficient to compile and maintain detailed information about newly acquired and legacy material to the departments online catalog and assist with the deposit of the departments digital assets in the Gallerys enterprise digital asset management system

* Demonstrated experience and skill in compiling and integrating large amounts of varying kinds of data; in organizing information and great proficiency in using and maintaining databases and various software programs sufficient to manage the departments acquisitions database and assign staff permissions, create and generate statistical reports for the department; manage updates and backups for data; handle all technical database issues; and plan and oversee future migration of database to updated formats and new systems

* Thorough knowledge of the principles of library science and its application to image librarianship, including currently accepted data standards such as the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR), Library of Congress classification, professionally accepted descriptive and subject cataloging principles and guidelines, and the National Gallery of Arts applications of these principles.

* Knowledge of the technical aspects of analog image conservation and preservation procedures, including archival photographic storage methods.

* Ability to crop, color balance, adjust contrast, re-size images and then prepare them for mounting in the integrated library system as well as the Gallerys digital asset management system.

* Skill in recognizing details in prints and photographs, and dexterity in handling fragile and valuable materials.

**Time-in-Grade:** Current federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement to receive consideration under merit promotion procedures.
