Position Title: Lead Accountant

Position Summary:
Performs various tasks as assigned by the Accounting Supervisor related to the supervision of accounts
payable, payroll and accounting as a Responsible for the finalization of internal and external financial
reports. Assists the Accounting Supervisor in the development, modification and enforcement of
accounting and internal controls and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
As assigned by the Accounting Supervisor responsible for the supervision and review of all work
performed by the Staff Accountants II and I, accounts payable clerk, payroll clerk and
administrative assistant.
Responsible for providing appropriate training to staff so that they can adequately complete their
assigned job duties.
Reviews monthly general ledger reports for various programs.
Develops and posts adjusting journal entries as required to correct posting errors, record indirect
cost, recognize earned revenue and reconcile receivables.
Finalizes monthly program financial reports and arranges for distribution of reports to Program
Directors.
Prepares and reviews external monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual financial reports for
submission to funding agencies.
Assists Program Directors with development, modification and monitoring of program budgets.
Responsible for monitoring of bank account balances, adherence to excess cash requirements and
review of all federal and state advance and reimbursement funding requests.
Assists the Accounting Supervisor in development, monitoring and enforcing all accounting
policies and procedures.
Assists the Accounting Supervisor in preparing records for the annual audit, in preparing responses
to audit findings and implementing recommendations to correct audit findings.
In the absence of the Accounting Supervisor, assumes the responsibilities of the Accounting
Supervisor.
Other duties as required to ensure that all accounting tasks are accurately and timely completed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Proficiency using word-processing, spreadsheets, and databases in a Windows environment
Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures
Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to deal with employees and community members regarding sensitive, confidential information
Able to handle multiple tasks, meet project deadlines, and prioritize workload
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting or related discipline and at least three (3) years of governmental accounting experience. An associate degree in accounting may be acceptable with adequate additional experience. Experience in computer applications is also required.
Must have a valid NM Driver's License and be insurable through the Tribal Insurance;
Must not have any DUI/DWI convictions within the last five (5) years from any Tribal, State, or Federal Court;
Must pass a background investigation;
Must pass a drug/alcohol screening.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Travel may be required. Occasional night or weekend time may be required. The employee is occasionally exposed to weather. The noise level is moderate in an office setting.
