Corrections officers provide intake and release services for inmates, maintain order, and provide security at the Clark County Main Jail and Jail Work Center.
Corrections deputies are responsible for the around-the-clock operation of the jail and must be available to work all shifts day, swing and grave as assigned, including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications
Education and Experience :
High school diploma or a GED certification.
At least twenty-one (21) years of age.
United States' Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident required.
Valid driver's license at time of appointment.
Two to three years of corrections experience in a comparable county, municipal or state agency in the United States.
Completion of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Correctional Academy or equivalent Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission certification as a Corrections Officer is required.
Syllabus of the academy completed and a copy of the certificate of completion from the academy attended must be included with the application .
Have the ability to successfully complete the Washington State Training Commission’s Equivalency Academy within the first 12 months of employment and prior to completion of probation.
Have no prior felony convictions and / or recent or excessive drug usage history.
Solid writing skills and basic report preparation.
Communication skills, mediation and problem solving.
Ability to exercise sound judgment.
Ability to use a computer with knowledge of various software applications.
Ability to successfully complete the background investigation.
No Physical Ability Test is required for eligible lateral candidates.

Knowledge of : Principles, techniques and procedure associated with incarceration and dealing effectively with incarcerated individuals;
federal, state and local laws relative to the inmate housing and treatment; department policies, directives and procedures and basic self-defense tactics.
handle multiple tasks and deadlines; exercise appropriate judgment and decision making; act quickly and effectively in emergencies and exert physical restraint of disorderly inmates.
Selection Process Details

Public Safety Testing Law Enforcement Written Exam : (Written-Weighted 100%) (Written Exam scores of 70 or above are accepted) Public Safety Testing (PST) is providing options for ON-SITE OR REMOTE TESTING -

Physical Ability Test : ( Lateral candidates are exempt from the PAT requirement )

Candidates will be evaluated based on the content of their applications and those deemed most qualified will be invited to participate in the remainder of the selection process.

Background Investigation - Involves a comprehensive investigation based on information provided by candidates’ personal history statements.
The investigation may include : a neighborhood check, reference checks, personal interview, work history check, criminal, driving, and financial history checks (from high school forward).
The Clark County Jail Services Department conducts background investigations on candidates for positions in the Jail Services Department who have satisfactorily completed the examination process.
The background investigation is a valued component in the overall picture of a candidate. Issues of integrity and ethics are taken very seriously due to our commitment to the community.
The investigation will include : a neighborhood check, reference checks, personal interview, work history check, criminal, driving, and financial history checks.
NOTE : Clark County uses custom third-party online software for personal history questionnaires. The PST Personal History Statement will not be accepted.
Final Selection Interview : As positions become available, candidates (who have successfully completed the background investigation) are contacted to participate in a final interview process.
Post Offer Process : The post offer process includes successful completion prior to actual employment of a physical ability assessment, polygraph, psychological evaluation and full medical examination including drug screening.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include but are not limited to the following :
Search, fingerprint and photograph incoming inmates during booking procedures
Supervise inmates for work details and direct work of trusties
Monitor food service and control inmate movement
Prepare and transport inmates to court and other appointments
Release inmates by established procedures for bail, court order or other authority
Supervise visitation privileges and recreation periods
Monitor security systems within the jail to maintain internal jail security
Monitor inmate mental and physical health and advise the Sergeant in charge when attention is needed
Observe and direct inmate activity through visual and electronic means
Respond to emergencies, such as fire, riot, hostage problems within the jail as set forth by policy and procedure
Respond with proper defensive tactics to maintain the physical safety of inmates, and other facility personnel
Answer and direct telephone calls
Monitor all jail access
Perform related duties as assigned

Retirement Information
All Clark County employees must participate in a WASHINGTON STATE RETIREMENT SYSTEM PLAN (PERS, PSERS or LEOFF).Employee contributions begin the first day of work.
Current contribution rates vary by plan but could range from 5% to 15% of gross pay, depending on the plan choice.
