Mitchell College is Hiring a Campus Safety Officer Near London, CT

Position Summary:

Under indirect supervision, Campus Safety Officers provide for the safety and wellbeing of Mitchell College students, faculty, staff and property through the education and enforcement of College policies and procedures. Campus Safety Officers respond to calls for assistance including emergency and crisis situations, and provide other services to the College community. Campus Safety Officers are assigned to security details for Mitchell College athletic events and social functions and may be required to work evenings and weekends as operationally necessary. This position is considered “essential personnel” and will be required to work during emergencies and campus closures as directed.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Perform routine patrols of and through on-campus buildings and property utilizing various patrol methods including but not limited to vehicle, foot and bicycle patrols. 
  • Mediate arguments between individuals in a calm and composed manner. 
  • Manage belligerent individuals with an impartial approach to prevent injury to members of the community. 
  • Respond to requests for assistance with the following:
    1. Medical emergencies, on-campus accidents (personnel and vehicle) safety hazards, the physical plant and/or fire/security alarms
    2. Routine calls for assistance including safety escorts and lock-outs. 
  • Work as part of a Community Resource Team assigned to specific Residence Halls to work closely with the Campus Life Coordinators and Resident Assistants helping students with difficulties that arise. 
  • Investigate and report complaints and violations of college regulations as well as state and federal laws. 
  • Write incident reports and document violations of college policy and other events in the log book.
  • Lock and unlock campus buildings and offices as required by Campus Safety policies. 
  • Enforce parking regulations and regulates vehicle and pedestrian traffic on campus. 
  • Collect and transport money, and may be responsible for Lost-and-Found articles. 
  • Campus Safety Officers work closely with members of the local police and fire departments on matters of mutual concern relating to the safety of the Mitchell College community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision:

This position reports to the Director of Campus Safety and may supervise student officers as necessary.

Physical Demands:

While performing this job, the Campus Safety Officer is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, hear and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The Campus Safety Officer frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The Campus Safety Officer will occasionally be required to sit, climb, or balance, and stoop, kneel, and crouch. The Campus Safety Officer is required to successfully pass a physical agility test, and a bicycle-training course to be eligible for Bicycle patrol. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • At least six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in an academic environment and/or with young adults is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills. 
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and work independently with a high level of discretion
  • Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in stressful situations.
  • Current and valid driver’s license (yearly driver’s history check is required).
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification is a plus, but training will be provided if the incumbent does not have such experience prior to the offer being made.
