Who We Are:The High School Learning Center (HLC) works with over-aged and under-credited students in the Lawrence Public Schools. We are an autonomous school located at 1 Parker Street Lawrence, MA. HLC offers various pathways to graduation. Students at HLC can be enrolled full time or part time, have in-person classes, hybrid or online classes, or a flexible schedule personalized to meet their individual needs. We strongly encourage applications from candidates whose experiences share important points of intersection with those of our students.Role:As the ESL Teacher, you will provide sheltered instruction in content classes, as well as lead classes for multilingual learners. You will also support your students with appropriate language interventions while ensuring that your students are receiving grade level standards-aligned instruction. There is an opportunity to build strong relationships with both your students and their families. Team: You will work alongside other math content teachers, as well as the other support teachers in the school. You will collaborate with the teachers to plan interventions and support for your students and school-wide goals. You will meet with your team each week in a professional learning community for professional development, to talk about student work, and to support instruction. You will also receive ongoing coaching by a school administrator.Responsibilities: Curriculum: Implement lesson plans and instructional materials that align with language proficiency standards and goals. Adapt curriculum to meet the diverse needs, interests, and language levels of students. Submit weekly lesson plans outlining the week’s standards, objectives, activities, assessments, and planning of support.Instruction: Deliver interactive and engaging English language lessons that incorporate speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Utilize a variety of teaching methods and techniques, such as communicative language teaching, task-based learning, and language games, to promote active learning and student engagement.Assessment and Feedback: Evaluate student progress through a combination of formative and summative assessments, such as exit tickets, quizzes, tests, essays, presentations, and projects. Provide constructive feedback to students to help them improve their skills and meet academic goals.Individualized Support: Offer personalized assistance to students who require extra help, including those with learning disabilities or language barriers. Provide additional resources or accommodations as needed to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed.Classroom Management: Establish clear expectations for behavior and academic performance in the classroom. Implement effective classroom management strategies to maintain a positive and productive learning environment conducive to learning. Adhere and uphold school-wide policies and expectations.Family and Community Engagement: Communicate regularly with parents or guardians to update them on their child's progress, discuss academic concerns, and solicit their support in student learning. Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and community members to enhance the math department and support student achievement.Professional Development: Engage in professional development activities to stay current with best practices in ESL instruction and language teaching methodologies. Participate in workshops, conferences, and training sessions to refine teaching skills and incorporate innovative teaching strategies into the classroom.Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Education, Linguistics, or a related field.
