TITLE: Sanitation Worker II

DEPARTMENT: Public Works, City of Franklin

JOB SUMMARY: This position operates heavy vehicles used in the collection of solid waste.

MAJOR DUTIES:

o Operates rear-loading refuse truck on an assigned route.

o Operates hydraulic mechanisms for compressing and dumping refuse.

o Operates trash truck, leaf loader, and grader equipment.

o Performs pre-trip inspections; greases, gases, and checks oil and tires on vehicles.

o Completes required reports.

o Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

o Knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment.

o Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.

o Knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work.

o Skill in the operation of job related equipment.

o Skill in oral and written communication.

o Skill in detecting signs of mechanical failure in equipment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Sanitation Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include city ordinances, city vehicle operations laws, safety rules, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in the collection of solid waste. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to operate heavy vehicles in the collection of solid waste. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of city sanitation services.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other city personnel and members of the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Possession of a valid Class A CDL or ability to obtain the license within one (1) year of employment.
