Position Summary
Responsible for implementing and maintaining (under the direction of the Vice President for Finance/CFO) Thornwell's accounting principles, practices, and procedures to:
  • ensure that financial reporting is presented fairly in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and is meaningful and comprehensive for internal and external decision making; and
  • coordinate accounting operational functions ensuring proper internal controls, timely and accurate payments to vendors and employees, and support for programs and other departments.

Core Responsibilities

1. Prepares financial reports, including but not limited to:
  • Month-end budget-to-actual financial reports for review by senior leadership and directors.
  • Monthly giving report including reconciliation of contributions per the general ledger to Mission Advancement reporting.
  • Board reporting including income statement (consolidated and operating), functional expenses statement, advancement report, and endowment activity.
  • Annual budget reporting for senior leadership, directors, and Mission Advancement.
  • Grant application and award reports.
  • Donor requests.
  • Reconciles bank accounts, investments, contribution income and other accounts monthly.
  • Reviews weekly accounts payable cash disbursement transactions for accuracy and completeness.
  • Administers fixed assets including determining additions per review of project reports and purchases, initial recording, the annual depreciation calculation, and asset retirement.
  • Administers pledge accounting including recording, reconciling to Mission Advancement reporting, and determining allowances and discounts.
  • Prepares reporting/documentation for annual external financial statement audit and Form 990 and Form 990T.
  • Manages cash flows including transferring funds.
  • Records income transactions other than deposits.
  • Transfers endowment, bequest, and Thornwell Charter School renovation gifts and other funds as determined by Board to endowment investments monthly.
  • Serves on the Thornwell Leadership Team. The Leadership Team is responsible supporting the mission, vision, purpose, and strategic plan of Thornwell and for collaborating with work groups, staff liaisons and senior staff on key strategies, challenges, and needs to provide insight on training, engagement, retention, and programs that will add value to the ministry.
  • Documents and communicates accounting policies and procedures.
  • Serves as administrator for the financial system.
  • Supervises the Accounting Specialist and Accountant providing needed information, support, training, guidance/direction and mentoring.
  • Serves as backup for payroll in conjunction with Accountant.
  • Processes mail with Accountant on a rotating basis.
  • Maintains Director of Finance records in accordance with Record Retention Policy.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by Vice President of Finance/CFO.
  • Maintains endowment fund accounting on a monthly basis using the Fundriver platform.
  • Serves as Finance member in Performance Quality Improvement (PQI) Administrative Group. Responsible for providing PQI data for Finance and attending quarterly meetings.
  • Drafts the annual budget for the Finance Department.
  • Prepares Finance reporting for other program reviews, such as NSLP and CACFP.

Working Condition

This role is approved for hybrid work schedule. Three days in the office and two days remote. While in the office setting, expectations include using office equipment including computers. May sit for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting with 7-10 years of relevant experience, required.
  • A SC CPA license, preferred.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Professionalism, integrity and confidentiality.
  • Experience with Blackbaud's Financial Edge, preferred.
