Position Summary

The low voltage technician is a skilled trades person who specializes in installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electronic access control systems and related low-voltage systems that restrict and monitor access to buildings, rooms, or other specified areas within University Housing facilities. These systems may include electronic card readers, keypads, biometric devices, electric locks, associated hardware and related software. This involves using specialized tools and equipment, analyzing system logs, and collaborating with other staff members to monitor the performance of building electronic access control systems to identify inefficiencies, develop new strategies, and improve the operations and functionality of electronic access control systems within University Housing facilities. The technician assists the security systems and access control manager in making changes to systems that augment the intended functionality of University Housing facilities electronic access control systems. This position is located within the University Housing Security Systems and Access Control Shop.

Duties/Responsibilities

Management of building electronic access controls systems – 55%

  • Installs, maintains and troubleshoots electronic access controls systems and associated low voltage systems using maps and customer input.
  • Participate in the design and modification of specialized electronic access control systems equipment and performs upgrades or enhancements to existing electronic access control systems to incorporate new features, functionality, or security measures as technology advances.
  • Applies the knowledge of electronic access controls systems across multiple platforms with the ability to adapt to different scenarios.
  • Coordinate the installation of new or replacement card readers, and troubleshoot student and staff card issues.
  • Troubleshoot life-safety and/or other electronic monitoring systems, collaborating with other housing facilities staff when needed to make repairs and/or modifications to building equipment and/or control systems.
  • Respond to work order requests in a timely manner and document work in the web-based work order system. Maintain accurate records of installation, maintenance, and repair activities. This includes documenting system configurations, equipment inventory, and any modifications or upgrades made.
  • Provide training to users on how to operate electronic security and access control systems effectively and safely.
  • Carry out work assignments with expected degree of independence and efficiency.

Operate and maintain electronic security/access control systems management software – 40%

  • Serve as the Security Systems and Access Control Shop’s primary technical contact for Genetec. Consult with FMD and University Housing IT whenever new client or software needs to be installed, when new equipment needs to be added to the UGA network, and/or to troubleshoot network issues associated with electronic access control systems.
  • Serve as a technical expert in facilities-related electronic security/access control systems hardware problems and system failures.
  • Update intercom mapping to residence hall front desks, as needed.
  • Support the research and proving of emerging electronic access control system technologies to help improve facility efficiency and effectiveness.

Other – 5%

  • Assist in the creation of documentation (such as standard operating procedures) and maintains instruction manuals for all regular and test procedures that pertain to access control and security systems.
  • Participates in maintenance after hour’s on-call program as required.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the purpose and scope of this position that may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, formal training programs, or on-the-job training.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $42,000.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
