Salary Range: $17.28 Hourly

Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lead Youth Sports Coach at Whatcom Family YMCA supports the development and operations of the youth sports program as it relates to clinics, leagues, camps, and tournaments; ensuring the program meets its intended goals. The position will teach basic skills and strategy of multiple sports while creating a safe environment for the players and families and opportunities for players to learn, grow and thrive.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Serve as the primary or secondary staff for Youth Sports sessions.
  2. Assist with training, directing, and monitoring volunteer program coaches.
  3. Assist in marketing and distribution of program information.
  4. Assist with coordination and planning for each youth sports season including developing team practice plans, distributing team uniforms and participation awards, and coordinating team photographs.
  5. Serve as a coach each season and facilitate appropriate drills and practices
  6. Serve as a positive role model and mentor for youth; teach positive behavior such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-respect
  7. Model relationship-building skills in all interactions; develop and maintain collaborative relationships with staff, parents and caregivers, and community organizations to maximize program impact and drive overall outcomes; maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility
  8. Transport and set up equipment for games and practices.
  9. Follow YMCA policies and procedures; Implement appropriate policies regarding medical, discipline, youth protection and emergency situations.
  10. Help to manage inventory and distribution of equipment and supplies.
  11. Keep Coordinator informed of activity plans and situations related to programs.
  12. Follow organizations policies and procedures regarding protecting youth from abuse; including screening and selection, training and supervision, and responding to allegations. Communicate to all staff and volunteers the organizations commitment to protect youth from abuse.
  13. Follow mandated reporting requirements.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Position requires a strong belief in the YMCAs areas of focus.
  • Person should lead by example the efforts of implementing the values approach to programming.
  • An understanding of basic sports skills as well as strong communication skills with youth and adults is essential.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Completion of Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens training before working with children.
