POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Climbing Wall Staff at the Whatcom Family YMCA create a safe and positive atmosphere that welcome and respect all individuals while promoting and maintain safe climbing conditions on the climbing wall and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Coaches and facilitates youth climbing classes and open climb times.
2. Maintain a safe climbing environment by maintaining and monitoring climbing wall ropes, anchors and holds.
3. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures
4. Ensures appropriate equipment is clean and notifies climbing wall coordinator of needs regarding annual safety inspection of the wall by a licensed or certified organization.
5. Performs equipment inspections, ensures appropriate equipment is clean and available as needed
6. Keeps the gym and gear room clean and organized
7. Follows organization’s policies and procedures regarding protecting youth from abuse; including screening and selection, training and supervision, and responding to allegations. Communicate to all staff and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect youth from abuse
8. Follows mandated reporting requirements

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum age of 18 preferred
• Climbing experience including belaying
• Knowledge of climbing ropes and anchors
• Experience leading youth
• Child abuse prevention training prior to working shifts
