Preston Feather Building Center is a leading provider of high-quality building materials, serving contractors and homeowners alike. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional customer service and maintaining strong relationships with our clients and suppliers. We are currently seeking a dynamic Inside Sales Representative to join our team and contribute to our continued success… ultimately with a goal to grow into an outside sales role.
Role Summary
As an Inside Sales Representative, you will play a critical role in our sales and customer service operations. You will be responsible for assisting customers with quotes, orders, and product inquiries, as well as coordinating with various departments to ensure a seamless customer experience. This position requires excellent organizational skills, professional communication abilities, and a proactive approach to identifying customer needs and opportunities for additional sales.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Quote & Order Process
  • Assist walk-in and call-in customers promptly.
  • Handle take-offs and provide quotes for smaller projects such as pole barns, decks, etc.
  • Manage inbound requests, prioritize outbound activities, and control time effectively.
  • Ask effective questions to identify and qualify customer needs, aiding in their decision-making process, and identify additional needs or opportunities for add-on sales.
  • Work closely with delivery and yard teams, inventory specialists, outside sales, cabinetry sales, window & door sales, and others to provide a seamless customer experience.
  • Accurately enter customer orders into the Point of Sale system and link to purchasing for special orders.
  • Review open orders and follow up with customers or vendors as needed.
  • Process order deposits based on company policies.
Sourcing/Purchasing Process
  • Inquire with vendors for availability, pricing, and product information on special order products.
  • Collaborate with the purchasing team to stay ahead of stock commitments.
  • Assist with stock receiving, merchandising, and inventory cycle counts.
  • Request inventory transfers from other PF branches as needed.
  • Review purchase acknowledgments and compare them to purchase orders for accuracy.
  • Ensure all open purchase orders are accurate and due dates reflect expected receipt for company cash flow planning purposes.
  • Communicate with customers on special orders ahead of and upon receipt to facilitate timely delivery/pick-up and reduce warehousing strain.
Sales and Delivery Process
  • Process sales transactions accurately in compliance with company policies for pricing, discounts, payment, and credit memo terms.
  • Coordinate delivery expectations between customers and PF dispatch.
  • Understand PF delivery service value and costs.
  • Update orders for delivery requests.
  • Answer delivery timing inquiries.
Returns Process
  • Coordinate returns and process them in compliance with return policies.
  • Communicate the status of returns with customers.
Billing Inquiries and Corrections
  • Provide statement details for charge account inquiries.
  • Process payments on accounts.
  • Answer or escalate billing questions and credit applications.
Product Training and Education
  • Participate in vendor product training sessions (on-site and off-site).
  • Utilize training resources in person, online, virtually, and through the company’s learning management system.
  • Develop skills and knowledge in several areas
    • Product knowledge (new products, building trends, etc.)
    • Construction industry
    • Sales tools
    • Leadership
Other Marketing or Business Development Support
  • Demonstrate and exhibit company core values in all interactions with customers and team members.
  • Provide value to customers by coordinating referrals to other sales team members or sources and matching homeowner needs to preferred contractor customers.
  • Engage in community and industry trade association involvement (e.g., HBA).
Qualifications
  • Previous experience in inside sales or customer service, preferably in the building materials industry.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Proficiency in using Point of Sale systems and other sales tools.
  • Knowledge of building materials and construction processes is a plus.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and development.
