Overview

Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for assisting people with intellectual and other disabilities to lead self-; directed lives and to participate fully in their community.
Organizational Responsibility

Schedule: 10pm - 6am average 16 hours a week

  • Week 1: Sun, Friday, Saturday
  • Week 2: Wednesday
  • Week 3: Monday Wednesday

Reports to: Residential Supervisor (RS) if working in the Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual
Disabilities (ICF/ID), OR the Community Living Supervisor if working in the Home and Community-Based Services, Supported Community Living (SCL) program

Supervises: None
Essential Job Functions

General:

1. Implement the mission of New Hope by functioning as a team player with people I support, co-workers, and other departments in conjunction with New Hope's Mission, Code of Ethics, and Code of Conduct.
2. Create and maintain an organizational culture of trust, empowerment, and teamwork by:
a. Providing an example for others to follow
b. Being loyal, confidential, and supportive to co-workers
c. Participate in special project teams
3. Communicate with all New Hope personnel, families, and the public courteously and professionally.
4. Perform duties in a manner that will be a positive role model.
5. Adhere to all aspects of the New Hope compliance program.
6. Adhere to New Hope's policies and procedures.
7. Complete the necessary documentation to meet Medicaid requirements.
8. Manage the cleanliness and infection control of the home. This includes completing the routine cleaning that is assigned to the home for each day/shift of the week.
9. Complete duties as assigned for my shift.
I 0. Maintain flexibility to provide proper coverage during emergency situations, inclement weather, and staffing shortages.
a. Continue to work and provide support until relieved by on-coming staff.
b. Work mandatory overtime hours when the policy has been implemented.
c. DSPs who work in the Supported Community Living program can sleep up to 5.5 hours a night, however, must be awake when individuals in the home are awake.
11. Perform duties in a safe manner.
a. Lift and transfer individuals using proper equipment, i.e. Barrier Free Lifts, Slings, Hoyer Lifts, Sit to Stand Lifts, etc., and use proper lifting and positioning techniques.
b. Use proper techniques to push a person's wheelchair ensuring their safety, i.e. making sure all safety belts, etc. are secured, and that leg/foot pedals are attached.
c. Provide transportation to appointments, shopping, planned outings, etc., as needed.
d. DSPs in the Supported Community Living program administer medications safely and accurately following the procedures of the training provided through the Medication Manager Course.
Supporting Persons-Served by New Hope:
1. Promote Person-Centered support as a best practice.
a. Focus on the person and understanding my role will require flexibility, creativity, and commitment.
b. Recognize each person is capable of directing their own life.
c. Honor those that cannot speak by seeking other ways of understanding them.
d. Recognize the unique culture, social network, circumstances, personality, preferences, needs and gifts of each person I support must be the primary guide for the selection, structure, and use of support for that person.
e. Advocate with the person and provide input and assistance in the development of their goals to be carried out within the home and the community.
2. Promote the emotional, physical, and personal well-being of the people I support by encouraging growth and recognizing their autonomy, and being attentive to reducing the risk of harm.
a. Develop a respectful relationship based on mutual trust and maintain professional boundaries.
b. Provide 'active treatment' by being actively engaged with those I support throughout all activities.
c. Assist those I support to prevent illness, avoid unnecessary risk, and understand their options and possible consequences that relate to their physical health, safety, and emotional well-being.
d. Support individuals to plan and prepare nutritious meals, ensuring their needs and preference are met.
e. Support individuals in maintaining a clean and safe home.
f. Provide assistance as needed to those I support with managing their finances.
g. Partner with those I support, and their support network, to identify areas of risk and create safeguards
specific to these concerns.
h. Be vigilant in identifying and reporting any situation in which those I support are at risk of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or harm.
i. Address challenging behaviors proactively and respectfully.
j. Conduct activities for those served in accordance with all safety rules, emergency plan, and pandemic plan procedures.
k. Report any concerns to the Supervisor/Supervisor on-call or Nurse on-call as needed.
3. Adhere to the tenets of the Code of Ethics of a Direct Support Professional by assisting those I support in leading self-directed lives and fostering a spirit of partnership with them, other professionals, and the community.
a. Maintain competency by participating in all mandatory NH in-services, training, and e-learnings.
b. Attend staff and program meetings to keep informed and updated with trends and procedures.
c. Advance my knowledge and skills through ongoing professional development.
d. Recognize the importance of modeling valued behaviors to those I support, co-workers and the
community.
e. Implement goals and objectives as directed in the methodology.
f. Accurately collect and document data as stated in the Person-Centered Plan and Behavior Support Plan.
4. Safeguard, respect and maintain the confidentiality and privacy of the people I support.
a. Seek information from those I support regarding their wishes in how, when, and with who privileged
information should be shared.
b. Protect the privacy of those I support by maintaining the confidentiality of their records and information.
c. Recognize confidentiality agreements are subject to federal and state laws and regulations, as well as
agency policies.
d. Seek out guidance to help clarify situations where I am unsure of the correct course of action.
5. Affirm the rights and responsibilities of the people I support.
a. Understand and respect the values of the people I support and facilitate their expression of choices related to those values.
b. Assist those I support to access opportunities and resources in the community that are available for people who do not have disabilities.
c. Facilitate the expression and understanding of rights and responsibilities with those I support.
d. Understand guardianship or other legal representation of those I support and work in partnership with to assure that the person's preferences and interests are honored.
6. Respect the people I support
a. Seek to understand those I support in the context of their personal history, their social and family
networks, and their hopes and dreams for the future.
b. Recognize and respect the cultural context such as gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation,
ethnicity, socio-economic class, etc. of those I support.
c. Honor the choices, preferences, abilities, and opinions of those I support.
d. Promote the use of people-first language.
7. Assist those I support to develop and maintain relationships.
a. Advocate with people I support when they do not have opportunities to build and maintain relationships
b. Recognize the importance of maintaining and facilitating relations between those I support, their family, and friends.
c. Assure that the people I support have the opportunity to make informed choices in safely expressing their sexuality.
d. Separate my personal beliefs and expectations regarding relationships (including sexual relationships)
from those of the people I support.
e. Refrain from expressing negative views, harsh judgments, and stereotyping of people.
8. Assist those I support to direct the course of their own lives.
a. Support the rights of those I support to lead self-directed lives, working in partnership with other members of the person's support network.
b. Promote self-determination in the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual pursuits of those I support.
c. Honor a person's right to assume risk in an informed manner.
d. Recognize that each person has the potential for lifelong learning and growth.
e. Celebrate, accept, and learn life experiences with people through their triumphs and failures.
9. Advocate with those I support for inclusion and full community participation.
a. Support people to advocate for themselves and offer my assistance when needed.
b. Represent the best interests of those who cannot speak for themselves.
c. Promote human, legal, and civil rights and help those I support to understand their rights.
d. Seek additional guidance when needed to promote advocacy.
Secondary Job Functions:
Perform additional duties that may be assigned from time to time to further the development of individuals served.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English and perform simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Campus home employees must be 16 years of age or older
  • Community home employees must be 18 years of age or older, have a valid driver's license, and be insurable under New Hope's auto insurance. and also have the ability to successfully complete the Medication Manager course after hire.

Experience Preferred: Work or volunteer experience with people with inte11ectual or developmental disabilities, or experience in a health care setting.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
The ability to read, write and perform simple arithmetic calculations. Serve as a role model for people served at New Hope. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people served by New Hope, co-workers, family members and the public. Ability to pass physical so you can lift people served if needed. Desire to develop new skills and grow professionally.
