Spokane Falls Community College is seeking qualified candidates for consideration for employment as an Anthropology Adjunct Instructor. We seek applicants with a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, diversity and global awareness, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. The college strives for faculty who are content experts and who are knowledgeable about best practices, innovative strategies, and instructional technologies that support teaching and learning.
We seek applications for an adjunct (part-time) teaching position for the following hybrid (blended) section in the fall quarter:
  • Survey of Anthropology , ANTH& 100, September 20 - December 15: TuTh, 12:05-1:20 pm, in-person lecture, plus 90-minute, asynchronous online instruction.
  • Archaeology , ANTH& 204, September 20 - December 15: TuTh, 1:30-2:45 pm pm, in-person lecture, plus 90-minute, asynchronous online instruction.
Continued openings in anthropology are expected for the spring quarter, April 1 - June 18, 2025. Compensation for one course was $4,514.66 (gross) in 2023-24 and is expected to be slightly higher in 2024-25.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare for and instruct college-level courses in Anthropology in face-to-face, hybrid or online formats based on need of the department.
  • Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process; evaluates student progress and provides clear, timely feedback.
  • Provide availability and accessibility to students through a combination of scheduled office hours, e-mail, and other effective means of responsive and timely communication.
  • Provide timely feedback and support to students.
  • Maintain accurate records for course grades.
  • May participate in department and general faculty meetings whenever germane.
  • Maintain professional standards in interactions with the college community.
  • Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follow established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, student safety and health issues, and related administrative processes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
COMPETENCIES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • MA/MS in Anthropology.
  • Prior teaching experience in Anthropology within higher education.
  • Communicating effectively in oral and written English in a classroom and with other professionals.
  • Working/interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
  • Acceptance of and willingness to support the role that community colleges serve in higher education, and specifically the mission, values, goals and objectives of the Community Colleges of Spokane.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution and the community/technical college system.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success in classes comprised of students with a wide range of abilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning and working environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • An earned doctorate degree in Anthropology from an accredited institution.
  • Two or more academic years of relevant teaching experience in higher education, including online instruction.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with diverse and underrepresented populations. Experience in participating in faculty groups and collaborating in an academic environment.
CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is an adjunct (part-time) position. Compensation will be pro-rated according to the amount of workload assigned. CCS reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE), which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.

Adjunct Faculty: Adjunct faculty must work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only). Once determined to be eligible, benefits begin on the first day of the month following the beginning of the quarter. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under ; TIAA-Cref retirement plan; leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.
