Location: Gresham, Oregon
Full-Time | 40 hours/week | Salary Range: $25/hr – $27/hr (DOE) | Benefits Included
Night shift: 10pm-8am (4 days a week). Days of week vary and dependent on schedule.

Position Summary

The Night Support Specialist ensures the safety, stability, and well-being of families residing in Just Compassion’s 50-unit family shelter during overnight hours (10:00 p.m.–8:00 a.m.). This position provides on-site support, monitors the facility, and assists guests with immediate needs in a calm, trauma-informed, and professional manner.

The Night Support Specialist also plays a key role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and consistent environment, completing nightly reports, and ensuring effective communication between shifts. This position requires sound judgment, empathy, and reliability in responding to participant and facility needs overnight.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Overnight Operations and Facility Oversight
  • Monitor the shelter environment to ensure safety, cleanliness, and adherence to shelter guidelines.
  • Conduct regular walkthroughs of common areas, units, and grounds throughout the night.
  • Respond promptly to participant requests, emergencies, or disturbances in a calm, professional, and trauma-informed manner.
  • Prepare and serve late-evening or early-morning meals and assist with morning readiness tasks.
  • Document nightly activities, incidents, and maintenance needs for the day shift.
  • Support the transition between overnight and day staff by providing clear, detailed hand-off reports.

Participant Support
  • Provide supportive listening, guidance, and de-escalation to participants experiencing emotional distress or crises.
  • Encourage and model respectful community behavior and adherence to shelter expectations.
  • Offer assistance to families with scheduling, transportation coordination, or early-morning routines.
  • Support individuals working night shifts or managing sleep disruptions by ensuring access to needed accommodations.

Safety and Crisis Response
  • Respond to behavioral incidents, medical emergencies, and facility alarms using established safety and emergency protocols.
  • Coordinate with on-call staff, supervisors, or emergency responders as appropriate.
  • Maintain awareness of participants’ well-being and conduct wellness checks as needed.
  • Uphold confidentiality and participant dignity at all times.

Collaboration and Communication
  • Communicate effectively with other Night Support Staff, Program Supervisors, and day staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions focused on trauma-informed care, de-escalation, and safety procedures.
  • Support case managers and shelter staff by reporting participant concerns, maintenance issues, or notable changes in behavior.

Documentation and Compliance
  • Maintain accurate nightly logs, incident reports, and facility checklists.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, safety standards, and confidentiality requirements (HIPAA, HMIS, etc.).
  • Participate in ongoing improvement of shelter systems and policies through feedback and collaboration.

Qualifications

Required:
  • Secondary education or equivalent experience.
  • 1 years of experience in shelter operations, residential services, or a related human-services environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and conflict-resolution principles.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision during overnight hours.
  • Basic computer and documentation skills.

Preferred:
  • Experience working with families experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
  • Background in behavioral health, social services, or crisis response.
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish, Russian, or other languages commonly spoken by participants).

Work Environment
  • Overnight schedule (10:00 p.m.–8:00 a.m.), including weekends and holidays as assigned.
  • Work occurs in a family shelter setting with regular interaction with adults and children.
  • Position requires extended periods of walking and light cleaning or facility upkeep.
  • Exposure to high-stress situations requiring professionalism, patience, and empathy.
  • Stay informed on Just Compassion and County policies, procedures, and program standards.
  • Uphold best practices in trauma-informed care, cultural competency, and harm reduction.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Program Manager and funding entities.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and assist with light physical tasks (e.g., setting up tables/chairs).
  • Ability to perform job duties that may involve bending, twisting, or reaching.
