Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Estimator to prepare accurate, competitive cost estimates for electrical and energy sector projects, including solar, oil & gas, construction and fabrication work. The Estimator will analyze drawings and specifications, develop detailed quantity takeoffs and cost models, identify project risks and opportunities for value engineering, and support bid preparation and commercial decision-making. This role requires strong technical knowledge of electrical systems and energy-related construction, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate with engineering, procurement and project teams to deliver timely, reliable estimates.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare detailed, accurate cost estimates and proposals for electrical, solar, oil & gas, construction and fabrication projects based on drawings, specifications and scope documents.
- Perform quantity takeoffs, labor and equipment pricing, material takeoff and costing, and develop complete bill of materials and labor hours.
- Maintain and update cost databases, unit rates and historical cost records to ensure estimates reflect current market conditions.
- Solicit, evaluate and incorporate vendor and subcontractor quotes; compare alternatives and document assumptions and exclusions.
- Collaborate with engineering, project management, procurement and field teams to clarify scope, resolve design questions and identify constructability or schedule impacts.
- Identify and quantify risks, contingencies, and opportunities for value engineering; provide sensitivity analysis and recommendations to reduce project cost or schedule risk.
- Prepare bid packages, estimate summaries, proposal narratives, and tender documentation; present estimates and rationale to senior management and clients as required.
- Support contract negotiations and manage change order estimating and back-charge calculations throughout project execution.
- Ensure estimates comply with company policies, client requirements, industry codes and safety standards.
- Participate in post-bid reviews and lessons-learned sessions to improve estimating accuracy for future projects.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3 years of progressive estimating experience with a track record in electrical and energy-related projects (solar, oil & gas, industrial construction and fabrication preferred).
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, single-line diagrams, schematics, P&IDs, and typical methods used in electrical and energy construction.
- Proficiency with estimating and takeoff tools such as CostX, On-Screen Takeoff, Trimble, Sage Estimating, or similar, and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Demonstrated experience preparing labor, material and equipment cost models, and developing accurate unit rates and assemblies.
- Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills; ability to present estimates and assumptions clearly to technical and commercial stakeholders.
- Experience soliciting and evaluating subcontractor/vendor bids and incorporating procurement considerations into estimates.
- Detail-oriented with strong time management skills and the ability to work under tight bid deadlines.
- Familiarity with industry standards, codes, and safety requirements relevant to electrical and energy projects.
- Certifications such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or membership in professional organizations (AACE, RICS) are a plus.
