The Opportunity
The Assistant Controller will oversee day-to-day accounting operations for a transportation-focused business unit and serve as a key finance partner to operational leadership.
This role combines general accounting, team leadership, financial reporting, cash management, and process improvement responsibilities. The ideal candidate understands operational accounting environments where revenue recognition, cost allocation, billing, collections, and vendor payments are critical drivers of business performance.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
- Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and account reconciliations
- Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts
- Prepare and review financial statements and management reporting packages
- Support internal and external audit requirements
Accounting Operations
- Oversee daily Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable activities
- Manage cash activity, banking relationships, and treasury-related processes
- Review revenue, cost allocation, and expense reporting for accuracy
- Monitor financial transactions across multiple operational systems
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies
Team Leadership
- Supervise and develop a small accounting team
- Establish performance expectations and accountability measures
- Support training, coaching, and career development initiatives
- Foster a collaborative, service-oriented team culture
Process Improvement & Systems
- Evaluate accounting workflows and identify opportunities for improvement
- Support accounting system implementations, upgrades, and enhancements
- Strengthen internal controls and documentation processes
- Partner cross-functionally to streamline operational and financial workflows
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 3–7 years of progressive accounting experience
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred
- Experience within transportation, logistics, distribution, warehousing, freight, supply chain, or other operationally intensive industries strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of the full accounting cycle and financial statement preparation
- Experience overseeing AP, AR, and general accounting functions
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities
- Ability to communicate effectively with both finance and operational stakeholders
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities
