Job Description
Crew Supervisor – Special Projects
Parks, Recreation & Tourism is seeking an enthusiastic, dependable, and hands-on Crew Supervisor who enjoys working outdoors and takes pride in maintaining safe, clean, and high-quality public spaces throughout the City of Chesapeake.
This position provides both leadership and active fieldwork, overseeing and participating in the daily operations of Groundskeepers, Technicians, and Facilities Maintenance crews. Work includes routine and preventive maintenance, repairs, landscaping, installations, custodial services, special park and recreation related projects, and logistical support for City-sponsored events and community functions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead, supervise, and work alongside assigned crews in daily grounds and facilities maintenance operations
  • Perform and oversee landscaping and turf maintenance including mowing, trimming, planting, fertilizing, pruning, mulching, aeration, and edging
  • Coordinate and perform maintenance, repair, installations, and minor construction projects for parks, facilities, trails, playgrounds, shelters, and related infrastructure
  • Support City events and special functions through setup, breakdown, transportation, and cleanup of tents, barricades, fencing, and event related equipment
  • Operate and oversee the use of heavy equipment, power tools, and specialized machinery such as tractors, loaders, mowers, backhoes, chippers, saws, and graders
  • Inspect and performs repairs and installations in parks, on playgrounds, sidewalks, parking areas, and facilities to ensure safety, functionality, and compliance with standards
  • Oversee irrigation systems and assist with water, sewer, and septic system maintenance and testing as required
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and ensure timely identification and completion of repairs
  • Assist with staff supervision, training, scheduling, performance evaluations, and day-to-day work coordination
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, inventories, timekeeping, and reports related to maintenance activities and equipment
  • Coordinate with other divisions within the department, contractors, and community partners to support projects, events, and service delivery
  • Ensure compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
  • Provide responsive and professional customer service to residents, visitors, and internal partners

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma, GED or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required within one year of hire date. Special skills or equipment certification may also be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications
Must have basic computer skills.
Must be able to read written instructions, drawings and diagram and prepare written reports.
Advanced knowledge of standard operations and best practices for general grounds keeping, landscaping, repair work and maintenance and playground safety.
Experience in the maintenance and repair of various outdoor recreational equipment.
Customer service experience.
Pesticide applicators certification.
Playground safety inspector certification (CPSI)
