Job Description
Public Works Operations is seeking a highly motivated and safety focused professional to join its team as a Safety Inspector. The Safety Inspector plays an essential role in promoting a safe work environment by conducting jobsite inspections, investigating workplace incidents, delivering safety training, supporting hazardous materials response, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety codes and regulations.

The Safety Inspector will work closely with Public Works divisions, employees, supervisors, and City partners to identify hazards, recommend corrective actions, and reinforce safe work practices.

Responsibilities include:
  • Perform daily jobsite safety inspections and enter findings into Maximo, the City’s asset management system.
  • Identify and document safety violations using established safety checklists and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Investigate workplace incidents, including accidents, injuries, and damaged utility lines, and prepare accurate findings and documentation.
  • Conduct safety training, including new employee safety orientation, Virginia Department of Transportation flagging certification, defensive driving, and substance abuse prevention.
  • Assist with hazardous materials spills in City rights of way by identifying spill types, evaluating cleanup requirements, and coordinating with appropriate divisions.
  • Maintain the nonhazardous materials temporary storage site at the Greenbrier Yard.
  • Conduct monthly Occupational Safety and Health Administration yard inspections.
  • Inspect and monitor fire extinguishers and emergency eyewash stations.
  • Provide backup support for the Safety Inspector II.
  • Attend Safety Review Board hearings and serve as a safety subject matter expert when needed.
  • Conduct safety meetings and provide additional safety support as directed.
  • Maintain occasional availability to respond to after hours safety incidents.


The successful Safety Inspector will have:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of construction and industrial safety principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state safety laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the duties, responsibilities, vehicles, tools, and equipment associated with municipal operations.
  • Ability to identify, assess, and assist with the containment of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to establish safe work zones, direct traffic, and coordinate effectively with multiple divisions.
  • Some knowledge of Virginia workers’ compensation regulations and injuries commonly associated with Public Works operations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and partner agencies.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and problem solving skills.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma or GED/HSE and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in occupational safety or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications
Safety related training with some OSHA certifications preferred.
