Exciting opportunity awaits a dedicated Orientation and Mobility Specialist to make a real impact in the lives of students with visual impairments from Pre-K through high school. This contract position requires in-person expertise, working across district-wide schools near Marion, NC. The term runs from August 17, 2026, to June 9, 2027, with a part-time commitment of 2-3 days per month, averaging 20-25 hours per week.
Work closely with children and young adults, empowering them to navigate their environments confidently and safely. In this specialized role, you’ll support both direct instruction and consultative guidance for OMVI students, tailoring plans to meet the unique needs of each learner.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in orientation and mobility or related field
- National certification through ACVREP
- K-12 teacher certification
- Demonstrated experience serving low vision or blind individuals from beginner to advanced levels
- Ability to develop individualized programs focused on independence, safety, and daily living skills
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
- Valid driver’s license for travel between district schools
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments and develop proactive orientation and mobility plans for students
- Deliver direct and consultative O&M instruction (daily living skills, pre-cane/cane skills, route and community travel)
- Collaborate with educators, IEP teams, and families to best support student progress
- Provide staff teaching/training sessions to enhance O&M practices across the district
- Manage caseload effectively, adapting services as needed for students’ evolving needs
