Empower students to achieve greater independence as a skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist for the 2026-2027 academic year. Based near Black Mountain, NC, this part-time, contract opportunity covers a wide age range from Pre-K through high school. You'll play a pivotal role in supporting students with visual impairments across multiple districts, helping them develop the confidence and strategies needed for safe and independent travel.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility or related field
- National certification through ACVREP required
- Current teacher certification for K-12 settings
- Demonstrated experience delivering orientation and mobility instruction in school or clinical environments
- Skilled in direct instruction and consultative support for low vision and blind clients
- Strong understanding of developmentally appropriate practices for Pre-K through high school students
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive mobility assessments and develop individualized instruction plans for students with visual impairments
- Deliver hands-on training in daily living skills, pre-cane and cane skills, safe route travel, and community mobility
- Provide guidance to school staff and families to support student independence
- Serve as a resource for district-wide compliance with established Orientation and Mobility guidelines
- Develop proactive safety and independence plans tailored to each student’s needs
Additional Details:
- In-person, on-site role requiring 2–3 days of work per month (20–25 hours weekly)
- District-wide caseload, supporting students across all grade levels and locations
- Collaborate closely with educational teams and families
