Description

The YWCA of the City of New York (YW-NYC) is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. We are a multiracial women’s social justice organization dedicated to addressing issues that emerge at the intersection of race, class, and gender. Founded in 1858, the YW-NYC is the first YW in the United States and part of an international movement of YWs worldwide. We currently serve 1,500 New York City school children by providing leadership and advocacy training for young women through our high school Girls Initiatives and Out-of-School Time (OST) programs for elementary and middle school students in culturally diverse communities in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The Director of Girls Initiatives is primarily responsible for the design and strategic implementation of YW-NYC’s innovative social justice and leadership programs for self-identified girls between the ages of 14-18. This position is responsible for program development design, creating curriculum, identifying and managing collaborations, partnerships, and resources to enhance program offerings and delivery, managing the Girls Initiatives team, and the operations at the YW-NYC Girls Initiatives office, located on 500 West 56th St, NY, NY. This role will provide strategic direction and training to the YW-NYC Out-of-School- Time (OST) staff, to integrate the agency’s mission of racial justice and women’s empowerment into the OST programs.

The Director of Girls Initiatives reports directly to the Senior Director of Programs. Key attributes of a successful Director are the ability to manage complex and detailed tasks simultaneously and drive results; effectively integrate program philosophy and manage policies consistent with the organization’s mission and goals; utilize analytical skills and creativity to develop and implement program initiatives; and the ability to work collaboratively and independently as necessary with key stakeholders and partnering organizations.

Responsibilities

Program Services

  • Manage all aspects of the GI’s program including program design, development, implementation, and assessment.
  • Oversee and ensure the development of appropriate enrichment and accelerated curricula in STEM, arts, advocacy, activism, leadership, literacy, college access, youth development, career exploration and service-learning which aligns with YWCA-NYC’s mission, value, and goals.
  • Lead and oversee the facilitation of core components of the Girls Initiatives staple programs.
  • Promote Girls Initiatives activities and programming to attract new participants, volunteers, and collaborating partners by coordinating with the YW Communications team.
  • Under the direction of the Sr. Director of Programs, lead and coordinate the Potential to Power Girls Symposium annual conference.
  • In partnership with YWCA leadership support the development of strategic vision & growth of the Girls Initiatives program.
  • In partnership with the Sr. Director of Development & Communications, develop a strategy to increase the YW-NYC Girls Initiatives Program brand and support in grants and proposal packages.
  • Identify and forge key partnerships with community-based organizations, educational institutions, like-minded nonprofits and faith-based organizations, advocacy groups, and local businesses.
  • Ensures high quality member-focused programs through innovative program development, evaluations, and on-going assessment.
  • Oversee parent engagement strategies including communication methods, parent workshops, and meetings.

Supervision, Administration and Compliance

  • Serve as an internal and external expert on program management including guiding the effective implementation of systems and processes to ensure that goals and objectives are met and supporting staff to implement best practices.
  • Oversee the management and operations of the Midtown-West FRC office location.
  • Hire, train and supervise program staff.
  • In partnership with the Senior Director of Programs, create KPI’s and measure GI’s staff performance and programs results.
  • Research funding opportunities and work with Sr. Director of Programs to identify potential donors to cultivate revenues for program operations.
  • Under the direction of the Sr. Director of Programs, review and enforce grant administration requirements under government contracts, including foundation grants.
  • Creating new budgets in MS Excel based upon day-to-day Program costs and charge information, analyzing each program offered to forecast future program budget needs.
  • Responsible for record-keeping, including student data and safely storing budget information, HR documentation, and all reconciliations made with the financial management team for the GI’s program.
  • Champion the organization’s educational, social justice, and youth development philosophy.
  • Collaborate with other program staff on social justice curricula and agency- and program- wide projects.
  • Represent the organization at external functions, meetings, conferences, and with the Board of Directors and potential funders.
  • Fulfill all other duties deemed vital to the function of the GI program by the Sr. Director of Programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, human services, or another related field required. Master’s degree and direct teaching experience preferred
  • 5-7 years of management experience
  • Passion for racial justice, gender equity, youth education, and community development
  • Deep knowledge of anti-racism and gender equity practices
  • Significant experience in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as an active team member
  • Knowledgeable and welcoming to diverse work culture and student body
  • Strong organizational skills and analytical ability
  • Solid computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite, internet research and outcome database
  • Strong work ethic and professional values
  • Commitment to promoting YWCA’s social justice mission, educational and youth development philosophy and content
  • Experienced in building and maintaining external relations on multiple levels
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout NYC
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred

The position is Full-Time, Exempt.
