JOB DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR OF DISCIPLESHIP

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position provides leadership, supervision, and creation of discipleship ministries for all ages.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
Direct supervision comes from the Senior Pastor, and Staff Parish Relations Committee for personnel issues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
PROGRAM MINISTRY PLANNING, IMPLEMENTATION, AND OVERSIGHT

1. (Co) Create and oversee the ministries at FUMC that help individuals grow as disciples of Jesus Christ.
1. Small groups
2. Bible studies
3. Service opportunities
4. Integration of new people
5. Fellowship opportunities

2. Recruit, train, and work with volunteers for various small groups, fellowship events, and service opportunities.
3. Encourage invitational and community-based interactions and ministries.
4. Empower church members to grow, love and serve in concrete and tangible ways in order to become stronger disciples and share the good news of Jesus in its many forms.
5. Affirm and empower the inclusive work of the church reaching out to and including members of the LGBTQIA community as essential and beloved members of our community.
6. Affirm and empower our ministries to and with those with special needs and their families.
7. Track attendance and participation numbers for the various ministries to be shared for our annual reporting.
8. Attend church staff meetings.
9. Facilitate team meetings for subgroups of the discipleship ministry area
10. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience
Committed faith (and faith development/learning) in Jesus. Experience in church life and ministry as a participant and as a volunteer or staff leader, mainline preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
1. Demonstrated ability to work and interact with a wide variety of people.
2. Must be a collaborative team player.
3. Willingness to learn church software.
4. Willingness to meet new people, engage in meaningful conversation, and connect them to ministry opportunities.
5. Proven excellent oral and written communication skills.
6. Ability to adapt and problem solve based on scheduling, weather, attendance, and personalities.
7. Public relation skills.
8. Familiarity with and use of social media platforms.
9. Ability to work with volunteers and be sensitive to their needs.
10. Ability to break down tasks so they can be delegated to people of varying experience and gifting.
11. Be an active part of the church staff team.

Other requirements:
1. Submit to background checks as required by the PNW UMC Conference.
2. Read and the sign church Safe Sanctuary document every two years or when updated, whichever comes first.

HOURS:
This is a part-time hourly position that is authorized for 20-25 hours/week. Required times include Sunday mornings from 7am-12:30pm, at least one weekday morning from 9am-12pm, Wednesday afternoons from 4pm-7:00pm. Other hours are flexible based on the demands of the job and the staff member’s schedule. This position offers sick leave and vacation time after a probationary period.
