Position Summary

The RN - Health Educator will be responsible for providing health information, education and referrals for all Women's Health patients. They will promote and encourage a healthy pregnancy and positive birth outcome. They will also provide and assist in linkage to resources as identified and determined by the team to benefit the patient and their family.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4 years of OB/GYN experience.
  • Current California RN license.
  • 2-3 years of health educator experience or CPHW Certification from the State of CA.
  • Previous experience facilitating health education classes with individual, small group and large group/classroom training/teaching preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the provision of services for the underserved and sensitivity working with a variety of people from low-income populations, with diverse educational, lifestyle, ethnic, and cultural origins; disabled, homeless, substance users, HIV (AIDS) infected, and/or physiologically impaired.
  • Current CPR and first aid certificate or willingness to be trained within first (90) ninety days of employment is required.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing and demonstrate a high level of listening skills.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Efficient time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and organizational needs.
  • Self-motivated with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional relationships.
  • Computer (PC) literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook email and database software.
  • Fluency in additional languages is preferred.
  • Ability to abide by standards of professional ethics and maintain HIPAA rules of confidentiality.
  • Adherence to infection control procedures, including but not limited to, standard precautions of temperature monitoring, hand washing, symptom self-monitoring, masking and social distancing.
  • Assist and support the Center/Department/Program to meet standards of High Reliability.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Support patient’s wellbeing throughout the pregnancy and postpartum period.
  • Provide direct one on one or group expanded education sessions throughout pregnancy to patients and family.
  • Ensure all patients receive the four (4) core classes, Car Seat Education & Installation, Safe Sleep, Preterm Labor and Breastfeeding education classes.
  • Conduct reassessments and evaluate pregnancy education programs, protocols, & standards.
  • Keep accurate records of CPSP intakes and education sessions during pregnancy.
  • Coordinate a wide range of health education sessions throughout pregnancy and postpartum period to support patient and family with delivery and first year of infant life.
  • Collaborate with OB/GYN provider to maintain patient’s medical care, as appropriate.
  • Review, develop, & recommend high quality, culturally appropriate written & audio-visual health education materials.
  • Develop, monitor and assess pregnancy health communication interventions and policies.
  • Assist with training CPHW’s & Health Educator I for core competency and pregnancy area specific content.
  • Consult with physicians & staff regarding related pregnancy education services.
  • Communicate with delivering Physician regarding any areas of concern for safe pregnancy outcome.
  • Liason from delivering hospitals to OB Providers regarding any changes or expectations required by hospitals.
  • Review and coordinate patient care when appropriate for external referrals.
  • Mentor/support other Health Educators to encourage continued growth in Health Education areas.
  • Travel to service locations as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work environment is characteristic of a medical clinic environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to handle, or feel. The employee is also required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must also possess hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using substances and/or not attentive to personal health and safety for themselves or their homes. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the client’s use of alcohol and drugs, and the lack of personal care. The employee may also be exposed to bodily fluids (blood, urine) and hazardous chemicals.
