STARTING SALARY $40,000 - $45,000

POSITION SUMMARY

The newly established Community Outreach Manager role will manage Wayside’s growing community outreach programming serving both pets and people. This position works collaboratively with other departments to expand existing programming, develop new programming based on community needs and works to build meaningful community partnerships to increase the overall impact of Wayside Waifs’ outreach efforts.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Implement the Community Outreach Program to meet identified community needs.
  2. Assist with the process to gather and assess community needs, priorities, feasibility, and opportunities.
  3. Collaborate with various community organizations, animal welfare organizations, social service organizations, civic leaders, and other stakeholders.
  4. Work collaboratively with all Wayside departments to coordinate logistics for and implement high-impact and quality community outreach programs. Community outreach programs may include TNR programs for community cats, community vaccine clinics, spay/neuter events, street volunteer teams, pet food pantry, food/supply distribution events, among others.
  5. Work collaboratively with Donor Relations and Communications Department to support fundraising and marketing efforts by providing stories of impact, statistical numbers, and reports.
  6. Manage, assist, and schedule all requests for community outreach events, including community events and fairs that fall outside of Donor Relations and Corporate Engagement. Will work closely with the Volunteer Department, and Volunteer Ambassadors to schedule volunteers and other staff to represent Wayside appropriately.
  7. Stay up to date with industry trends in community outreach and animal welfare to keep Wayside at the leading edge of innovation.
  8. Endorse and support the use of volunteers in all avenues of work being performed.
  9. Promote Wayside’s mission, goals, and objectives.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

PRIMARY TASKS & DUTIES

  • Collaborate with Director of Community Education and Outreach, Vet Clinic Leadership, Volunteer Department, and other Wayside Leadership as appropriate to organize and implement regularly scheduled community outreach events.
  • Track and report necessary data to measure progress and success of all outreach initiatives.
  • Represent Wayside Waifs at community events.
  • Recruit, train, and manage Community Outreach Volunteers and communicate additional volunteer needs with the Volunteer Manager and Director of Community Education and Outreach.
  • Promote the program’s availability in the community.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with community partners to expand resources for pets and people.
  • Engage directly with community members seeking assistance and/or participation in programs in a manner that builds trust and respect.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/ KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Enthusiasm for building relationships and connecting with community members.
  • Non-judgmental attitude and open mindedness, even in difficult situations.
  • High level of organization and ability to manage many different components of the Community Outreach program: program development and implementation, volunteer oversight, and marketing.
  • Ability to recruit, develop, train, and direct a high performing team of volunteers.
  • Comfortable interacting with dogs and cats to fill in and support where necessary at community events.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Education/Experience
  • Bachelor degree or higher, relevant experience in lieu of bachelor’s degree will be considered.
  • 2 years of outreach programming experience, community-based programming, or similar work-related job experience.
  • Experience working with diverse communities.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to apply common sense and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to recruit, screen, and train volunteer instructors.
  • Spanish speaking preferred.
  • Computer skills, which include basic knowledge of Microsoft office products and preferably InDesign software.

Working Environment

  • Both office and outdoor settings.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and be willing to drive the Wayside Waifs’ van.
  • Willing to travel to area locations in year-round weather conditions
  • Ability to use computer, telephone, copy machines, and media equipment.
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, noise level is moderate to high, frequently working with and exposed to a variety of animals.
