Wildlife Biologist
Annual Compensation ($USD): $71,784 paid on a bi-weekly basis. Individual pay is determined by the applicable CBA and related articles.

A Brief Overview
Under the general supervision of the Senior Airfield Operations Manager, the Wildlife Biologist implements various day-to-day activities associated with CFR Part 139.337 Wildlife Hazard Management at Detroit Metro (DTW) and Willow Run (YIP) Airports. The Wildlife Biologist is responsible for carrying and/or enforcing the tasks/duties/requirements as prescribed by the Wildlife Hazard Management Plan.
What you will do
  • Supervises and conducts daily wildlife observation activities of the Airfield Operation Department. Oversees and maintains the appropriate record keeping duties along with reporting Wildlife Strike Information to the FAA National Wildlife Strike Database
  • Supervising Airfield Operations personnel in carrying out the responsibilities of CFR Part 139.337 Wildlife Hazard Management and the requirements of the Airport Certifications Manual
  • Maintains various firearms and equipment used by Airfield Operations Department for wildlife control activities. Ensures that firearms and ammunition are properly and safely stored
  • Evaluates wildlife trends, Wildlife strike reports and makes recommendations for appropriate response activities
  • Maintains and secures Wildlife Depredation Permits for DTW and YIP. Prepares annual Wildlife Depredation reports
  • Chairs Wildlife Management Committee meetings, as scheduled
  • Escorts vendors and vehicles to sites located in restricted areas of the airport
  • Performs annual Wildlife Hazard Management training for Airport Authority personnel to meet the requirements outlined in FAA Advisory Circular 150/5200-36 and any subsequent revisions. Conducts shotgun and rifle training classes for authorized Airport Authority staff involved in Wildlife Control activities
  • Serves as the Airport Authority’s liaison with the USDA and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agencies in permit and other wildlife related issues
  • Assists in the development of the Wildlife Hazard Management Assessments
  • Undertakes and manages wildlife activities including but not limited to, depredation/trapping of birds and animals that present hazard to aircraft operations
  • Identifies habitat and attractants on and around DTW and YIP airports and makes recommendations based on sound scientific principles to alleviate or eliminate potential harm to the traveling public
  • Review construction plans and landscape projects for potential wildlife impacts on aircraft operations and make recommendations to enhance safety at DTW and YIP airports
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences that includes:
    A. At least nine (9) semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, and wildlife management or research courses in the field of wildlife biology, and
    B. At least twelve (12) semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, and entomology, or research courses in these subjects (excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate), and
    C. At least nine (9) semester hours in botany or the related plan sciences, or
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least nine (9) semester hours in wildlife subjects, twelve (12) semester hours in zoology, and nine (9) semester hours in botany or related plant science, as described above in A., B., and C., plus appropriate experience or additional education, and one (1) year of experience monitoring and coordinating wildlife activities.
  • Proficient with Office Suite Software (Core - Email, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Presentation)
  • Proficient with Database Systems / Software 
  • Proficient with Weather Prediction/Tracking Systems/Software
